May 1,1928 – May 27, 2025
With deep love and profound sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend, Greta Isobel Poole, who died peacefully after a brief illness at the age of 97.
Born in May 1928, mom lived a full and remarkable life defined by love, selflessness, generosity and unwavering strength. She was a woman of great intelligence, with a sharp mind and a thoughtful perspective that her family deeply admired.
Mom grew up in the Toronto Beaches neighborhood, attending Balmy Beach school and Malvern Collegiate in her youth. Since the early 1960s, she made her home in the Fallingbrook area, where she lived for the remainder of her life.
A dedicated nurse by profession, she cared for others both in her work and in every facet of her life. Her nursing career began at Toronto General Hospital and later in Long Term Care.
Our mother held a deep appreciation for Eastern medicine and holistic healing, a belief that guided her daily life and wellness practices. We sincerely believe this lifelong interest contributed to the vitality and clarity she enjoyed well into her late 90s.
Her kindness knew no limits, and she gave without hesitation—always putting the needs of others ahead of her own.
Mom was the wife of the late Douglas Poole, and the cherished mother of six children: Doug (Jackie), Kaarina (predeceased), Dawn (widow of Gerry), Glenn, Linda, and Derek (Jennette). After surviving a stroke at the age of 95, her heart broke with the loss of her daughter Kaarina; a pain she carried with quiet grace.
She was an extremely proud grandmother of Sarah, Dan (Laura), Oscar (Mackenzie), Henry, Emily, and Nathan, and the delighted great grandmother of Isla, whose presence brought joy to her final years.
Mom was the last surviving sibling of her close-knit family, having been predeceased by her beloved brothers and sisters: Doreen, Frank, Ralph, and Donna. The bond she shared with them remained unshaken by time and distance. Summers at her sister Doreen’s lakeside home in Keswick were a treasured tradition where joyful days were spent with her six children, her siblings, and extended family, creating memories that she held close throughout her life.
Mom took joy in British whodunits, Golden age Hollywood films, and the music of the big band era.
Our mothers favourite time of year was the Christmas season. She filled her home with warmth, laughter, and generosity.
She lived independently in that same home until her final days—a testament to her enduring strength and spirit.
Mom leaves behind a legacy of compassion, resilience, and love. She taught us to be kind, to care deeply, and to give freely. She will be forever missed and lovingly remembered by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched. As told to her many times, “there is no kinder person than our beloved mother”.
The family extends their sincere thanks to the compassionate medical staff at Michael Garron Hospital, particularly those in the H7 unit and the G5 palliative care area, for their care, compassion, and support in her final days.
To honour her memory, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or any charity close to your heart are appreciated.
