Jack passed away peacefully at North York General Hospital due to recent health complications. Jack leaves behind to mourn his children Kit (Lorne), Jack Jr (Sheila), Jancey-Lu (Bob) and Jilann (Chris) as well as 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews and close family friends. He is predeceased by the love of his life Luella, the woman he always referred to as his bride, as well as his parents, siblings, and his infant grandson Liam.
Jack was born in Toronto to very humble circumstances, however he never let that define him and made a great life for himself, his wife and family. Jack and Luella’s early years together were in the Canadian Air Force where they made lifelong friendships and toured North America with many great adventures. He rose to the rank of Squadron Leader before retiring in 1966. Jack went on to work for APEO (Professional Engineers of Ontario), OACETT (Ontario Association of Certified Engineers Technicians and Technologists) before enjoying a 20+ year career at George Brown College both as a teacher and the Dean of Electronics and Engineering. He always felt a duty and a pleasure to give back to the community in which he lived and was for instance one of the founders of the North York Minor Football League, served as an Air Cadets Officer, and was the President of the Air Crew Association, Air Force Association, and the Legion Branch 165. He also served on numerous Boards both within the engineering profession and the wider community. Over the years, Jack was awarded the Canadian Forces’ Decoration and Clasp, the Queens’ Diamond Jubilee Medal, and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal.
Jack and Luella were beloved members of Parkwoods United Church as congregants, Central Board Members, and members of the choir. In the 1970’s they spearheaded the Parkwoods Players putting on numerous plays and operettas. Years later they would be the catalyst for the formation of the Associate Members Armour eights Officers’ Mess Bridge Club.
Upon his retirement, Jack and Luella travelled extensively both within Canada and further abroad. They both experienced everything they could on these adventures, but always found their way home to their cherished family. Family was the most important aspect of their lives and they often vacationed with their children and joined them for holiday meals to cement memories. Jack continued to enjoy this tradition until the very end. Wonderful memories were made, and valuable lessons taught, that his children and grandchildren will remember forever. Jack led a wonderful life, one that is a shining example to his family and society, and he will be deeply missed.
The family wish to extend their deep gratitude to the staff of North York General Hospital for the wonderful and compassionate care given to Jack in his final days. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jack’s memory to the charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Parkwoods United Church, 85 Parkwoods Village Drive, North York, Ontario on Saturday, May 14, 2022, at 2:00 pm
