Brother John Masterson, S.J.

John J. Masterson of the Society of Jesus died peacefully on Wednesday, April 5, 2023 at René Goupil House in Pickering, ON. John, the son of William Masterson and Eva O’Neil was born in Chesterville, Eastern Ontario. He was 93 years old and in his 69th year as a Jesuit. All of his Jesuit life was centred upon the day-to-day operation of Jesuit institutions and residences at various locales in Canada and the United States. He served at a refugee centre in Toronto, and was sought by many for his practical advice. Br. John’s dedication to the vocation of a Jesuit Brother was an inspiring example to his religious community and to the staffs of many institutions. His retirement to Pickering was in 2013 and he continued to take part in community life until his death. Visitation at St. Ignatius Chapel, Manresa: Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Centre, 2325 Liverpool Road North, Pickering, from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11 from 7-9 p.m. with prayer service at 8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St Ignatius Chapel (Manresa) Pickering, on Wednesday April 12, 2023 at 9.30 a.m. followed by burial at the Jesuit Cemetery in Guelph at 1.30 p.m. Donations to the Jesuit Advancement Office, 43 Queen’s Park Cres.
