Joseph Doherty (Joe) 98, passed away at home on April 2, 2026. The family honored his wish to pass at home. Pre-deceased by his partner of 49 years Lillian (Lily) Durnin. Joe will be missed by Lily’s children Jamie (Cathy) Gary, Lynn, Johnny and Patty and Danny pre-deceased. He will be missed by the grandchildren, Bridget (Rob), Shawna (Lou), Michael and Corey and the great grandchildren, Selena, Claudia, Corey & Ava. Joe spent many happy times with the grandchildren and great grandchildren. They always brought a smile to his face as soon as they walked in.
Joe was born in Glasglow, Scotland on July 14, 1927, to the late Henry and Lily Doherty. Joe had many siblings, Mary, Harry, John, Robert, Tommy, Huey and Nellie. He will be missed by his many nieces and nephews, especially Marie, Jackie and Marlene who he had many phone chats with and would meet up, when possible, for a coffee. I am sure they talked about politics, sports and every other life event.
Joe immigrated to Canada in 1952 and was a proud maintenance employee for the Canadian National Railway (CNR). He retired in 1987 from the CNR. His real love was singing though. Joe had a beautiful singing voice. He started singing in dance halls over in Glasgow and continued here in many halls and legions. He sang the big band music, but Joe loved to hear new music too. His love and Lily’s love for music is what brought them together. He got to see Barbra Streisand and Michael Buble with Lynn and he was impressed by this. He critiqued the shows all the way home.
Joe loved going to Jamie and Cathy’s cottage yearly with Lily. He usually came home sunburned but always said he had a great time. He also loved to spend time with the grandchildren & great grandchildren. There are plenty of pictures and videos of their happy times. Joe always loved a good joke, some of his were corny, but we laughed anyway. In the summertime we would go to Centre Island and Joe had the most fun kicking the ball around with the grandchildren and great grandchildren. He spent so much time with all the kids and he had a lot of fun. Many times, Joe walked the kids to school and was always there after school to walk them home.
Another love Joe had was going to church. He would get dressed up every Saturday for so many years. Then after Lily passed, he started going every day. He would take the subway and bus and go to a mass and then walk the Danforth for sometimes 2-3 hours. He will be missed by his many friends at the church.
The family would like to acknowledge the Health at Home Care and the Temmy Latner Centre at Mount Sinai hospital. The PSWs, nurses, doctors and coordinators that supported the family through their palliative care services. Each and every person gave us the support we needed to keep Joe at home where he wanted to be.
There will be a mass for Joe on April 14, 2026, at 10:00 am at Holy Name Church, 71 Gough Avenue (Danforth Ave.), followed by a reception in the basement at Holy Name church. All are welcome.
In Lieu of flowers, a donation to Holy Name Church or the Temmy Latner Centre would be much appreciated.
