When Mum passed away, we lost our iconic matriarch. She was a strong, beautiful, generous, and elegant lady, with a great sense of style, glorious white hair, and a shoe collection worthy of Imelda Marcos. Mum was a brilliant and sparkling hostess who was happiest when surrounded by her family and friends. Her husband, Irv, was the love of her life. When Dad became ill, Mum was his determined advocate and support, allowing him to continue with the life he loved. After Dad died, Mum immersed herself in fundraising for Sunnybrook Hospital, volunteering at their greenhouse, and in taking courses at York University. She was a savvy bridge player and investor, a keen competitor, and a natural athlete. Even in her nineties, after a recent hip replacement, Mum’s sense of fun emerged in her game of croquet; with a mischievous grin, she would knock an opponent’s ball flying out of the croquet court, then trounce us all. At her hundredth birthday celebrations, Mum was the belle of the ball. To honour her, guests came from near and far, offering the following words to describe Mum: fabulous, wonderful, smart, loving, energetic, independent, spunky, classy, courageous, outspoken, spirited, kind, amazing, youthful, and an inspiration. Mum was all of those. She will be missed by many, and especially by her daughters, Judy Backus and Carolyn Kernohan, her grandchildren, Campbell (Paula), Peter (Michelle), Sarah, Kristina (Alexis), and Martha (Joseph). She was also blessed with seven great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren. We are grateful for the affection, patience, and kindness shown to Mum by caring Amica staff. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario or a charity of your choice. A celebration of Jeannette’s life will be held at St. John’s York Mills Anglican Church, 19 Donridge Drive, Toronto, Ontario at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 13th, 2016. A reception will follow.
