Maddy was my first placement supervisor in 2008.  I adored working with her. She was an amazing, tenacious advocate for women and children. She loved her work and all those who surrounded her. I have never forgot her kind, bold nature with the ability to challenge and support those who she worked with. Such a kind soul. My condolences to those who loved her. I am blessed to have known her.

Crossing paths in life with humans like Maddy it’s more than an opportunity, it was a life changing experience! 
We met at Nellies in 2015 and I was another lucky one who she generously took under her wing! 
Maddy was a colleague, a friend, a mother but mostly she was family! 
She shared so much wisdom with me and asked nothing in return! Perhaps only salads, she loved my salads for our team lunches! “Love, can you make your special?” she would say to me, “I’ll take care of the rest!” And she did. She took care of everyone and everything clients and staff.
Maddy had a lot of courage, she was brave and witty! She inspired me in so many ways!

I will be forever grateful to her, she knows why.  Only a few people are able to leave such a beautiful mark on earth and she was one of them! She was always and will continue to be a beautiful angel.

Dear family of Maddy,

My name is Emily and I live in Kingston Ontario.  I just heard of Maddy's passing yesterday online.  She was such a special soul.  Here is a little tribute I wrote about her on my Facebook:

Maddy was the most rebelious, firecracker of a woman I have ever had the privilege of working with (for many years) at Nellie's Shelter.  At the time she was in her mid/late 60s, but you would have never known.  She was tenacious to her core, hilarious, witty, and an extremely strong and proud advocate of the outstanding women we worked with daily. She was a strong advocate for social justice and change.  I'll never forget that voice and her super mischievous grin.  She had such a huge impact within the feminist and violence against women sector in Toronto. She is a beautiful beautiful soul.  Thinking of my Nellie's family and Maddy's family 💓

I am thinking of you all.  What a courageous woman.

I had the pleasure of working with Maddy at Nellie's Women's Shelter as both a student and an employee. Maddy took me under her wing and taught me so much about working with women and how to treat survivors with dignity and respect. She was a woman who did everything with her heart and she worked tirelessly to ensure the women and children in her care were given the best opportunities to thrive. One of my most fond memories of working at Nellie's was the family-style lunches we would have once a week with delicious Somali food ordered by Maddy - the spicier the better! The sense of community she created through her work made everyone feel loved and welcomed. I feel lucky to have known Maddy for she was truly a special woman. 

I was one of the lucky students who had the privilege of being placed with Madeleine for my college placement. I’ll never forget how nervous I was when I first started and within only a few minutes she had me laughing and feeling like I was a part of the team. She was so dedicated to helping women in any way she could and somehow brought a sense of light to what was often a dark situation. 

Madeleine was an inspiration for me as I started my career and I am forever grateful to have known someone as special as her. May she rest in peace🤍


Maddy was a dear neighbour, friend, and co-worker at Nellie's. She cared very much about the survivors of gender-based violence that we supported. She taught me a lot about the intersecting barriers that our clients faced. We had great conversations on the subway ride to work. 
On her way walking home from church, she would harvest some basil from our garden, and endlessly praise its flavour. We are among the many people who had the pleasure of being fed by her fabulous cooking. 
She left voicemail for us, telling, by name, our family members that she was praying for, though she had never met them. Maddy never ran out of love to share.


Oh my Maddy, our  Queen of Queen, how much I’m missing our conversations, I thank you for everything you did for me and for so many others, for everything you thought me, for all your knowledge, for all the memories and experiences you shared with me, as you always told me “life is not perfect, is beyond that, but we need to  do our best” . I’m sorry I couldn’t be there, but you know that I was.
