With her daughters at her side, Marcia died smiling with the help of MAID (Medical Assistance in Dying),which was made necessary by pancreatic cancer, Thursday, September 29. Born in Chicago in 1934, Marcia was a loyal alum of South Shore High School, Northwestern University and University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. A U.S. Navy Air Force widow (David Rosenbaum) and divorcée (John Rubel), she was a loving and beloved mother to Jane Rubel and Mary Rubel (Terry Bohnsack), sister to Diane Frank, and aunt to Amy Ettinger (Madelaine Adelman), Ellen Nusbaum (Roger), Jim Rubel (Sheryl), Remi Rubel (Ken Ancell), and Marcie Rubel (Michael Rufo), as well as their children.
Marcia’s pioneering spirit fuelled her move to Canada in the 1970’s with two young children. She deeply appreciated the life she was able to build for herself and her daughters in her adopted country. She was the first female sales executive for MCA and she travelled the world as an award-winning travel writer. After retiring from a successful real estate career she enjoyed playing hooky and living life joyfully every day.
Marcia’s strength and courage guided her through this last difficult year with her characteristic humour and determination intact. She made it very clear all along that she wasn’t afraid of the fight with pancreatic cancer, but was glad to be able to leave on her own terms.
Marcia and her family want to thank the Insight Naturopathic Clinic team, led by Dr. Jill Shainhouse; their compassionate and comprehensive care brought great comfort to Marcia and kept her feeling on top of the world! Also to be thanked are the Palliative Care teams at Princess Margaret and Mt. Sinai hospitals – and most especially R.N. Yuri Zachariah, for his unconditionally supportive and warm attention.
And God bless Angelo, Minnie and Bessie from Enrico’s Hair Salon for their tender loving care for 40+ years. It helped make all the difference!
