Proud Canadian, Companion of the Order of Canada (1997), Member of the Order of Ontario (1994), and
recipient of scores of honours and awards in recognition of her continuing on, and expanding, the
Chalmers family tradition of philanthropy. Generous benefactor and friend to hundreds of creative
individuals, programs and institutions in the fields of craft, dance, education, journalism, literature,
music, opera, social welfare, theatre, the visual arts and cultural administration.
Predeceased by her parents, Floyd Sherman and Jean Boxall Chalmers, and her elder brother, Wallace.
Private burial in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto.
Details of a public celebration of Joan’s life will be announced later.
Joan would be delighted if her friends, colleagues and co-supporters of Canadian arts and culture
would extend her commitment by supporting the arts in this country. In her honour, support an artist,
fashion a work of art, sponsor a project, commission a composer, make a donation, join an arts board,
dedicate a performance, lend your personal energy to a creative endeavour, make a difference for those
who creatively reflect and enhance this great nation.
