Marika (Maria) Lupu passed away on Monday, December 29, 2025, in her 102nd year, with family by her side. She was a deeply loved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She is remembered for her strong determination, positive attitude, love of family, and as an inspiration to all who knew her.
She was the beloved wife of the late Toma (Tony) Lupu; a devoted mother to Fr. Michael (Lillian), Tom (Nancy), and Flory (Russell); a cherished grandmother to Nicu, Maria, Yvanna, Hillary, and Marshall; and a proud great-grandmother to Nicholas, Henry, Edison, and Harriet.
Marika immigrated to Canada from the Ukraine alone as a young woman after the Second World War, where she met the love of her life, Toma. Together, they married and built a successful life as tailors and real estate entrepreneurs in Toronto, where they raised their three children. Marika and Toma were actively involved in building the Romanian Orthodox Church community in Toronto.
Marika had a passion for gardening. Her yard was always carefully cultivated, filled with vibrant flowers, vegetables, and fruit trees that reflected her patience, dedication, and love of beauty.
She embraced new technology, impressing her family by learning how to use a cell phone at the age of 95, using it to stay connected with and to enjoy photos of those she loved most.
