Maria Giovanna Scornaienchi

Maria Giovanna Scornaienchi was born in Castelvetrano, Sicily, Italy on September 12, 1946 where she lived until 1965 when she joined her siblings in Toronto, Canada. She began working in a doll factory to help support herself and family. She married Giuseppe in 1969 and lived in a flat for a short time until they bought their forever home on the same street as her sister. She had her only child, Sante in 1970. Shortly after she returned to work and spent more than 20 years working for York Manufacturing as a sewing machine operator. Maria lived in the same Toronto neighbourhood for over 60 years where she enjoyed the company of family, friends and neighbours. She was especially grateful to have her son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren live across the street from her. After the loss of her husband in 2017, she lived independently in her own home as she always wanted until her passing.

Maria passed peacefully after a short illness with pneumonia on Wednesday, July 30, 2025 at St. Joseph’s Health Centre, she is survived by her son Sante (Carla), and her grandchildren Chiara & Mia.

She is remembered by her sister Antonina (Late: Vito), and her brothers Late: Nicola (Late: Carmela), and Late: Giuseppe.

Maria will also be remembered by her In-law’s, Late: Mario (Maria), Late: Assunta (Late: Giuseppe), Late: Eugenio (Maria), Late: Giovanni (Luigina), Michele (Anna Maria) and Rosina (Late: Ruggiero).

Visitation for Maria will be held on Monday, August 4, 2025, from 2–4 PM and 6–9 PM at Jerrett Funeral Homes. A funeral mass will take place on Tuesday, August 5 at 10:30 AM at St. Clare's Roman Catholic Church, followed by entombment at Westminster Cemetery.
