Martyn Roberts of Toronto, Ontario, passed away suddenly at the family cottage on Saturday, September 5, 2015. He was a loving and outspoken husband to his wife, Pam of 45 years; a hero to his adoring children, Gareth and his wife, Krista, Lisa and her husband, Rob, and David and his partner, Kimberly; a devoted brother to his sister, Liz and her husband, Dave; a wonderfully attentive grandfather to Ethan, Lauren, and Catherine; and, a popular uncle to Graham and Joanna. He was predeceased by his parents, Jack and Olive Roberts.
Martyn was born and grew up in Leeds, Yorkshire. He had fond memories of his rugby days and a brief brush with fame when he 'jumped into Olympic reckoning' in the triple jump. He graduated from the Welsh National School of Medicine in Cardiff in 1975. While in Cardiff he met the love of his life, Pam. They married and moved to Toronto in 1976, where Martyn completed his residency in Anaesthesiology at the University of Toronto the following year. Martyn practiced for almost forty years at hospitals in downtown Toronto, spending most of his career at the Toronto Western Hospital, where he was Chief of Cardiac Anaesthesia for over a decade and was responsible for the establishment of a cardiac transplant program. Martyn was a committed teacher and served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anaesthesia at the University of Toronto since 1980. He is fondly remembered by many colleagues, residents, medical students, and patients for providing countless laughs, much advice, and great compassion.
Martyn had many interests, particularly the cottage, golf, windsurfing, sailing, Leaf games, Welsh rugby, weather, traffic, and travel. He always had time for friends, especially at difficult moments. However, above all else, Martyn loved spending time with his family, whom he adored and who will miss him dearly. He lived with great passion for life, enjoying each day and encouraging others to do the same.
