
Gillespie, Mary Adele (February 8, 1920 – December 6, 2022) Adele lived an independent, self-reliant, full life, with good humour, grounded in faith. She had high expectations of herself, and compassion for those around her. Adele was born in Toronto, graduated from the Loretto College School and the University of Toronto., and worked at the North American Life Assurance Company until her retirement. Adele was an avid golfer, and a life member of the Scarborough Golf Club. She spent many happy winter vacations with friends playing golf on Sanibel Island, Florida. Adele was generous with her time and care for her friends and many cousins. She had a quick wit and loved to laugh. Adele loved music and mystery novels and had a keen interest in current affairs. She started her day with the Globe and Mail opinion pages and crossword puzzle until after her 100th birthday.
When she turned 90, Adele retired her golf clubs and moved to the Russell Hill Retirement Residence, where she found a group of good friends who shared a dinner table, bridge games, movies, outings to concerts, and, eventually, 100th birthday parties.
Adele was predeceased by her parents, Edith and George Gillespie of Toronto, her brothers, George and Howard Gillespie, her nephew, George Gillespie, and her cousins Joan and Claire Snetsinger, and Tony Wells. She is survived by her nephew, Michael Gillespie, and her cousins, Tanny, Douglas, and Kaylie Wells, and Hilary Rankin. The family wishes to extend their thanks to the staff and personal support workers at the Russell Hill Retirement Residence for their respectful, loving care for Adele. A Funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, December 13, 2022 at Holy Rosary Parish 354, St. Clair Avenue, W., followed by burial at Mount Hope Catholic Cemetery. www.Rosar-Morrison.com.
