I still remember the first time I met Basel at dance practice, roughly 7 years ago. In the years that followed, I only saw him a handful of times at parties and get togethers. Although I did not have the privilege of getting to know him more, I know that he was a wonderful guy: intelligent, kind, gentle mannered, genuine, and an outstanding pianist... and I am happy that I had the pleasure of being his dance partner and friend. 

He will truly be missed, but his presence will always live on in our hearts.

Dear  Suzanne, Michael, Ambrose and Mathias. I was so upset to hear of your incredible loss.  As you might remember I taught Basel in Grade 7.  He was one of my all time favourite students  really.  I remember him to be a respectful, intelligent, responsible and thoughtful young man.  I also remember that whenever I needed something done properly, like a message sent to another teacher, gym equipment retrieved or a more complicated task within the classroom   he was my go to guy.  He was so responsible, so solid.  I regret that I wasn't able to attend the funeral or visitation as we were dealing with loss in our extended family at the same time. Please accept my deepest sympathies and condolences.  I can't imagine how difficult it must be.

Words cannot begin to express how depressing and tragic this is, especially so close to one of the holiest days of the year.

I just wanted to say that I am terribly sorry for your loss. He will be truly missed. He was a precious friend who had this special ability to be coincidentally there when I needed help/support. We were friends in high school, but only became closer during our undergraduate studies. He was the stability I needed in first year when so many things changed all at once. We often studied together (especially for calculus), and he'd always lend his ear to my rants about issues with my extracurricular activities.  We went to the science rendezvous event together that year (This was particularly memorable for me because I'm pretty sure I embarrassed him terribly that time because I wanted to wait in line for liquid nitrogen ice cream with a group of kids- sorry about that Basel). Since then, we've often hung out to play board games, pool, poker, etc., and had many intellectually stimulating discussions on everything from philosophy and religion to human relationships and society. Every year since second year, ON my actual birthday, he'd ask me when my birthday was and would wish me a happy birthday after I tell him that it was that exact day. I am very grateful to him for this simple act. I am still unsure whether he really knows my birthday, but he sure was consistent. However, my most precious memory, which might not even mean that much to Basel himself but I was extremely grateful for, was this one incident when he found me during a time when I was quite literally cold and scared. I locked myself out of one of our research facilities this one time. My keys, money, TTC pass, jacket, everything was locked inside. I had my phone with me, but of course, just my luck, the battery was dead. This was the middle of winter, and I wasn't sure how to go home that day. I was starting to run out of options when Basel happened to see me. I didn't realize how scared I was until I saw him and felt the overwhelming feeling of relief. Because of this, he was one of the few people who've seen me cry before now. He was a true friend and patiently  waited for me until I calmed down. In the end, I got home that day by borrowing his phone to call home. I regret not taking a lot of pictures of us hanging out together, but these kinds of memories will always be with me. He was a truly special friend who has greatly impacted my life and whom I am extremely grateful for. (p.s. sorry for the long entry...)

So devasted to find out about Basel. Joey arrived today from S.Francisco and it was from him that I learned the horrible news. Could not  hold the tears. Really liked Basel who was always such a great friend to Joey - very understanding. Such a beautiful young man. I still have a couple of the birthday invitations. One of them was when he was 9. When I think of Basel some of my warmest memories are when he was in high school and joined us on a ski trip in March Break.. He hadn't done much skiing but picked it up very quickly... Within hours he was flying effortlessly down the big hills ... I can still see him in my mind with those long legs and his natural grace and athleticism ... Those memories will be with me always ... Forever loved and never forgotten

I got to know Basel outside of the classroom, be it playing ball hockey, ice hockey, Reach for the Top or playing him in chess.  A brilliant student, and in a rare occurrence, his heart was bigger than his mind.  To Mike, Suzanne and the rest of his family, I can only say this:  He's in a far better place. Words cannote= explain the grief. I used to call you "king" when you and my daughter Akeela were crowned Prom King and Queen. You looked so handsome.
