Every once and a while over the years I have received spam  email with Nicholas's name.  Today, for some reason,  I decided to investigate a little further and discovered he had died over 3 years ago. I am so sorry, dear Kilbourn family. I had no idea.   Although Nicholas and I totally lost touch after I moved to Spain in 1976 ( where I still live) my memories are so vivid of your son and brother. It is as if he were standing right here beside me now. 
 Our French horns made us close band and orchestra partners at Jarvis, and our love of French made us  true colleagues in Mr Humphrey's classes.  He  gave me a Dennis Brain recording of Mozart concertos when I was marrried and I still have it!   Of course we were also at Rosedale  together and were close neighbours, our two families  knew each other back a generation.   I hope you are safe   and smiling wherever you may be now Nicholas. Your wise,  kind, humourous,  spirit was  ( and remains) a great inspiration for me.

Nicholas's name suddenly came into my mind this week, so late after his death, so I Googled him and found the obituary, 2 years late, but I wanted to put my memory into the world. I knew Nicholas from Jarvis; he played on the piano for me part of his symphony. Such wonderful kind eyes, I remember. A sensitive soul.

Thank you, Nick, for Glenn Gould, Tom Lehrer, and Monty-Python on the Wharfedales. For Polly's yummy, luscious, positively heavenly cookies and biscuits. For your grade 4 recitations of Jabberwocky, the Walrus and the Carpenter, and Lehrer's "New Math" (to mention only a few, recited effortlessly). Thank you for shinny on the backyard rink (your dad playing shirtless, oblivious of the elements). Thank you, also, for football, softball, and soccer games wherever a vacant pitch provided, in the early days with Dan Heap and his prodigious brood in tow, transported via a VW Van, "the Heap-mobile". Thank you for improvisations on the old Heintzman grand; for your cheeky, effortless Mr. Banks (Mary Poppins at Deer Park P.S.); for the unalloyed pleasure of a chocolate bar lunch, a completely rational alternative to the boring victuals of Deer Park P.S.
Thank you, Nick, for demonstrating that high school needn't be a rustication; that it could actually be a remorseless yet cheerful, even polite questioning of everything. Thank you, Nick, for providing an antidote to intellectual complacency and dishonesty.
Thank you for the friendship we had in those years. What an enormous piece of luck, what an enormous privilege, it was to have known you.
God rest.

I did not know Nicholas that well, he was close to my children.But he was a caring, very interesting person with so many talents. So sad to see him go, but it seemed to have been an easy exit for Nick and that is what ultimately matters. I am thinking of you Elisabeth.With much love to all of you.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences on your sad loss.

Nick and I were close during our 70s undergrad York University years. Being musicians, our paths often overlapped. We were both regulars at the Electronic Music Studios at York, and Nick played on Vernal Equinox Jon Hassell's first album, recorded there in 1976. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vernal_Equinox_(album) Those who knew him then recognised a talented pianist and emerging composer who embraced the first wave of minimalism with gusto and élan.

He was my friend and buddy. I hung out at his family's Rosedale home, and made the trek with Nick to his artist aunt Rosemary's cottage home in Caledon East several times, the site of my early Frog Bog excursions, performances & recordings in the mid-late 70s.  

Nick was also an integral member of my '70s Toronto music groups Rhythm Pals, Cargo Cult, and a core member of the group New Music Co-op during its foundational years. He performed with the latter group in our 1976 concert at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York. 

Nick and I co-composed several works, a difficult type of project I've only undertaken with him. I recall his piano work Nature Boy and the ens. piece Fat Head, both reflecting his sense of humour and considerable musical chops. There were more. 

I hope we will hear them in the near future.

So sad to hear of the passing of my old pal from Rosedale school and Jarvis. Nick was always the brightest guy in the room; so gifted and possessed of that wry wit. A true Renaissance man. My condolences to the family.

Nicholas, you were the bright light of our Jarvis music class. The spring peepers will not forget you, nor will we.
