We mourn the loss of Pat Healy with whom cancer broke the tie on May 17, 2025.
Pat was the eldest son of Jim and Virginia Healy of Racine, WI. Virginia ferried and tested aircraft as a member of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) during World War II. Jim was a merchant mariner who sailed repeatedly around the world. Pat came by his adventurous spirit and wanderlust honestly.
Pat was educated as a Meteorologist at the University of Wisconsin. He sailed Finn dinghies. He piloted his own Cessna 152 then American Champion Scout taildragger airplane. He travelled the world. He raised Newfoundland dogs. His library displays his diverse interests.
Pat’s vocation was sailing. He developed sailors as Head Coach then Director of Intercollegiate Sailing at the U.S. Naval Academy, as Canadian National Sailing Coach, and in the rest of the world. He trained and mentored judges for sailing around the world for World Sailing. His rules knowledge and training expertise were sought by many. His clear understanding of the rules and his kind, humorous and spirited manner enlightened and entertained us all as he urged us to get better. He is an inductee in the Canadian Sailing Hall of Fame and in the U.S. Intercollegiate Sailing Hall of Fame.
Throughout his illness with multiple myeloma, Pat focused on how to live well with the changes brought by symptoms and treatment regimens. He managed with acceptance and humour.
Pat is survived by his “reason for living” Lynne Beal, his brother Mike, his nephew Conor and niece Makenit.
Tributes to Pat may be made through donations to Myeloma Canada.
A Celebration of Pat's Life will be held on Sunday, June 1st, 3:30 pm, at the Balmy Beach Club, 360 Lake Front, Toronto, Ontario, M4E 1A7 (foot of Beech Ave).
