Pat and I both sailed with the University of Wisconsin's Hoofers Sailing Club, then raced out of Chicago for three years (winning Boat of the Year in 1972), at the Southern Ocean Racing Conference in Florida, and at the 1/2 Ton Nationals in Florida with the late Peter Barrett.  We re-connected decades later, when he came to Madison to umpire the Intercollegiate Sailing Association's  match and team racing championships.  Pat was a great shipmate, an excellent friend, and a resource to sailing.  He will be missed greatly.

I sailed with Pat at the University of Wisconsin Hoofers Sailing Club, on Lake Michigan in Chicago, and in the ½ Ton Nationals in Florida, all from the mid-60s to the mid-70s ... then 40 years later while umpiring at Hoofers.

Pat was a good friend, a shipmate, and an excellent sailor.  He is missed.

I knew this guy well - from the Olympic level sports....
I will miss him badly.

I'm so sorry to learn this morning that Pat fought cancer and passed away. He and I coached at the Olympic level in the early 80s. I thought he was 10 or 15 years older than he was. It must have been his hair color that fooled me, because in every other respect, he was young and innocent. 

Pat believed in developing sailors, in teaching those on the rise, and in investigating new ideas with fellow experts. He was observant and practical - a natural sciences scientist who, many years ago in Kiel, explained that at higher latitudes, the Coriolis effect was more pronounced, or that you could predict whether the shifts would be right or left by observing how low-level clouds tracked compared to the surface wind direction. 

Pat's record at the US Naval Academy was remarkable. Nobody was recruiting athletes for the sailing team, so he had to work with the students who showed up. He molded them into champions. 

Fair winds, Pat, my friend - but I bet you predicted them.

Eight bells . . . Pat was a good man and a good friend. I will try to follow all the good advice that Pat gave me over the last 35 years.

Pat was just a great person. I learned so much from him. He will be a significant loss to the sailing community.

Pat Healy represented decency whether in matters germane to sailing or in his private capacity.
His ‘kind’ will be missed.

Pat was always there to offer higher level courses, enhanced and professional development for sailing judges of all levels. He made you think outside the box and challenged your reasoning to make you better on the water and the protest committee panel. Our team of dedicated volunteers are forever grateful for all the hours he put in to make us all just that much better. He enabled us to carry the torch and to pick up where he left off to mentor and guide our fellow judges.
May we all, especially Lynne, remember all the wonderful moments we shared with him and keep them dear to our hearts. God speed to blue bird sailing days.

My deepest condolences to Pat's family and friends. 
Pat was always nice to my parents [his aunt and uncle] and to me and my sister. Pat also taught Ann and me how to sail.

I last saw Pat and Lynne in the Fall at Dennis Toews' memorial at Bronte Yacht Club.  Like Dennis, any time Pat said something, you listened because he had great stories to tell and questions to ask.  Pat was one of the rare people you could listen to and never be bored.  His intellect and experiences were always interesting.  He touched many people in a positive way and we are all better off for knowing him.  
On behalf of the Fogh family, I extend our sincerest condolences to Pat's family and Lynne.  Pat is now explaining the rules and weather again to my dad.

Pat Healy, recruited me to sail at Navy in 1979. I was one of several South Florida sailors who would end up racing dinghies at Annapolis, including Bob Anoll (Miami Yacht Club), Rick St John (Miami Yacht Club), Robby Brown (Coconut Grove Sailing Club) and Rick Merriman (St. Petersburg Yacht Club).  As a dinghy sailor, Pat was our coach, leading us to so many National Titles in the late 70’s and early 80’s it became known as “The Dynasty”.  I remember countless road trips with him to New York, Boston and even West Point (U.S. Military Academy).  He left us in 1982 to go coach the Canadian Olympic team.  I fondly remember those years together and would look forward to practice everyday.  The sailing world has lost a giant in our sport and one of the very best coaches I‘ve had the pleasure of sailing with.

My experience of Pat was in judging, from the early 80s into the two thousands. He was a harbinger of more competitor-centric judging, not one of the starchy old school. His rules knowledge and application was inciteful, but never pushed aside his warm, supportive character. I will miss Pat greatly, even though our paths crossed rarely in recent years. I cannot imagine the loss to those closest to him, and especially Lynne. My condolences.

Lynne - I'm so sorry for your loss.  I met Pat for the first time as a very very very green judge-to-be while he was coach at the Naval academy.  He suffered my learning through my most embarrassingly-long 2 hour protest hearing as the jury called witness that had to be recalled from their Navy dorm.  Pat and I shared that laugh still decades later.    I learned so much from him.  I loved his approach, his attitude, his humor and his willingness to give.  He helped make me a better Judge, a better umpire and a better human.    Much love to you and your family.   David P.
