My last few messages to this beautiful man have gone unanswered and over the Christmas holidays I’ve been afraid to look at his FB page or search for his obituary…willing it not to be true.  I knew his time was short, but didn’t realise how short. I’d still harboured hopes he’d make it out to Australia for a visit…something he’d longed to do. 
Our connection was incredibly unusual, he was my high school friend (Carole’s ) big brother. We reconnected about 15 years ago, when he was trying to connect me with her, and we became very good friends over the next decade, in our shared affection for her, chatting about the past and how that forms us into the people we are today.
 I always found Richard to be incredibly insightful, a kind and caring man. His friends were his family, he loved his work and his body was his temple. I’ve loved seeing his happy vacation clips, so nice to see he was surrounded by his family of friends and their love, and his nieces who we adored. 
Taken way too soon, you will be missed my friend.

I worked with Richard at Rogers several years ago and have such fond memories of Richard when working there. He was always so kind and approachable. We shared many laughs in the office. My condolences to all of Richard's family and friends during this time. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

To the Taylor Family, Relatives & Friends

There are no words or feelings that can describe the most unexpected loss of our beloved Richard Taylor.  I say that because like so many in the Commodity Tax community, he was a friend, colleague, mentor and someone who was more than eager to share his expertise and knowledge to anyone who would ask.  

Richard and I crossed paths many times in a friendship that spanned 25 plus years and in all those years even though our politics may have been polar opposite, he never had a bad word to say.  I loved our chats on everything other than commodity tax and the time we spent eating and drinking at Spring Rolls on Dundas!  Downtown Study Group, 905 Study Group, TEI and the CPA Commodity Tax Symposium gave us lots of opportunities for interaction, food and drink.  I shall cherish those memories for the rest of my life.

Richard may no longer be with us but I will always remember him for his Cheshire cat smile and happy demeanor.  A Yiddish word sums up my feelings for my friend, Richard and that word is "mensch"!  For those that might not know, mensch means "a person of integrity and honor".  According to Leo Rosten, a mensch is "someone to admire and emulate, someone of noble character. The key to being 'a real mensch' is nothing less than character, rectitude, dignity, a sense of what is right, responsible, decorous." The term is used as a high compliment, implying the rarity and value of that Individual’s qualities.

RIP Richard, you will be missed but never forgotten.


I miss my dear friend. Richard was brilliant, warm, kind, and funny.  I will treasure the many long conversations we had about US politics, religion, and life in general. It breaks my heart that we lost him so quickly, especially someone with so much energy and life. 

While our friendship is paramount, I also want to acknowledge that he was an extraordinary professional. Richard helped shape my role when I joined Tax Executives Institute, where he was an active member and leader of the Canadian Commodity Tax Committee and Toronto chapter. He was impactful, passionate, and authentic. We awarded Richard the prestigious President's Award in January to acknowledge his efforts. We are all so much richer for all of his contributions and for his friendship. 

Richard was a good friend for many years. He was smart, funny and fun to talk with. I enjoyed our time working together at Rogers and our time just being friends. 

I’ll miss you Richard. 

Taken from us much too soon. Richard was a pleasure to work with at TEI. He will be missed for his great sense of humour, bright smile and as a brilliant expert in his field. Forever in our memories.

It is with a heavy heart that the family, friends and colleagues mourn the death of Richard Taylor. He was taken from us much too soon. He was admired and respected by all who knew him. A nationally recognized expert in his field of taxation, Richard was a proud and passionate leader of the LBGTQ community within Rogers. And boy, did he love his Patriots!! I will remember him for his courage, strength, pride and humility - attributes we all strive to achieve. Personally, I had a number of very positive experiences during my short time at Rogers. One of them was knowing and working with Richard. Rest in peace, mon ami. We miss you already.

I have know Richard for many years and met at various tax meetings and functions. He was a very friendly person and always willing to help and give tax advice. My prayers and thoughts are with his family at this time of their loss. Rest in peace.

Richard was a very honest, helpful and an intelligent man whom I met several years ago. He was passionate about his work and the causes he cared for. Richard will be dearly missed. I met Richard a while back and worked with him on several committees.  He was very engaging, kind and took an interest in getting to know you. We lost a great tax practitioner.  Rest in peace pal. My condolences to his family. 

I was saddened to hear of Richard’s passing from my daughter, a Rogers employee. I had a professional relationship with Richard and 
I am glad i had the opportunity to know him over many years.  He was so intelligent and sharp. He understood and analyzed issues. Underneath i could tell he was a very caring person. I will miss you Richard.

I met Richard several years ago as part of the Tax world.  He had great insight into the issues and was always very helpful.  As one of the top practitioners, his legal and business training meant that he could see the issues in an especially learned way.  But he never made you feel stupid that you didn't have the same insight.
When I announced my retirement a couple of years ago, he sent me a note that was so warm and touching, it brought tears to my eyes.  
And he could also be very funny.  I will definitely miss his presence at our Tax group meetings.  He will leave a very large hole in our lives.
My condolences to his family and friends.  A great man has left this world.

So sorry to hear about Richard’s passing. He was a wonderful indirect tax practitioner and a man of integrity and  kindness. My condolences to his family. 

Richard was a great guy.  I worked with him for many years and he was such a pleasant person to work with and taught me so much.  It was always a pleasure to talk when we would cross paths again.

My heart aches at this sad news.  Richard was a wonderful friend and colleague, and I am grateful to have had him in my life.  He always had interesting insights and he always made me giggle.  He will be missed. 

I will miss Richard. He has been a sales tax buddy of mine for at least 30 years in TEI, CTIG and TCTSG. Highly professional and well-respected.  Very nice man...

Whether discussing politics or tax policy, sharing a meal, or meeting religiously at the gym in the morning at conferences ....Richard was always a positive influence. His kindness and integrity were unassailable.
You are missed by many.
