With great sadness, we announce the passing of Ronald Cecil Hore, who passed away peacefully in Southlake Hospital at the age of 90. And he did it with style and a touch of poetry, passing on the day of his birth.
Ron was born on September 25, 1935, to Jean Marshall Ogle and Cecil Gordon Hore. He grew up on Rykert Crescent in Leaside, and seven years later, he welcomed his little sister, Jane Sharon Hore, into the family home.
Ron attended Leaside High then graduated from University College at the University of Toronto with a B.A. and M.A. in Geology and later became a Professional Engineer.
In 1961, Ron joined the Ministry of the Environment where he quickly moved up the ranks, making many life-long friends along the way. In ’61, he also married the love of his life June Painter. Together they had two children, Lisa and Dean. Ron and June moved to Sudbury in 1983 after Ron was promoted to Regional Director and Manager of the Mid-Ontario Region.
Though his life was filled with accomplishments others might parade, Ron carried himself with quiet modesty. He was a Boy Scout leader, a scuba diving instructor, an executive coach, a professor, an on-air personality, a water skier, a downhill and cross-country skier, a boater, a crossword champion, a world-class jury-rigger, a cat dad, and a world traveller.
He was also passionate about giving back, generously donating to numerous charities every year. After retirement, Ron and June returned to Toronto, where Ron shared his knowledge and wisdom freely - teaching English as a second language and becoming a mentor and Big Brother to many.
Ron was always happiest after picking up friends and family at the marina and shuttling them off to his beloved island cottage on Lake Joseph. There he spent many a happy summer – martini in hand.
He was a loyal friend, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a thoughtful uncle. He had a keen intellect and an empathetic heart. And though he held many titles in his life, his favourite role was being a Papa to Shanna, Holly, Natalie, Nicholas and Elizabeth. He was always there for them, whether he was helping them with homework, cooking them a cottage brekkie, or leading them on a bug hunt.
Ron is survived by his daughter, Lisa (Richard), her children, Shanna (Keenan), Holly, and Natalie (Chris); his son, Dean (Susan); and their children, Nicholas (Naielly) and Elizabeth – all who will cherish his memory forever.
He was preceded in death by his wife, June Hore, his sister Jane Aitken, and his brother Donald Melville Hore.
Visitation will be held at the Jerrett Funeral Homes – Scarborough Chapel on Tuesday, September 30th from 10:30 am -12 pm with the funeral service to follow (12 pm). In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations to be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
