WOODSIDE, Sheila, Margaret – Sheila passed away peacefully with family by her side on November 11, 2010 at Toronto General Hospital in her 80th year. Beloved wife of Donald. Loving mother of Blake (Anne), Thane (Tina) and Scott (Kim). Proud grandmother of Malcolm, Fraser, Owen, Connor, Claire, Marshall, Andie and Ethan. Also survived by sisters-in-law Eleanor Sutherland (Lloyd) and Elaine McLeod. Sheila (nee MacDonald) was born in Saint John New Brunswick. After high school she was awarded a scholarship to study at the Museum School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Later she attended Dalhousie University where she met Don. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and Sociology, she and Don moved to Toronto. While raising her three sons, she attended the Ontario College of Art, graduating with an A.O.C.A Honours Degree. She also was a docent with the Art Gallery of Ontario for several years.
Painting, traveling with Don and spending summers in Nova Scotia with Don and her family at their summer cottage were Sheila’s great passions. Each summer she would paint the wildflowers and impressions of the landscapes of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. During the winter months she would paint the ski country of Ontario, the mountains of Colorado, the islands of Hawaii and the many other places she traveled with Don.
A watercolour artist, Sheila was greatly influenced by the works of noted Canadian watercolour artist Marjorie Pigott with whom she studied Japanese brush painting. The misty ethereal influence of the Nanga School shows clearly in her works which goes beyond simple representation to a more personal statement which reaches out to the viewer. Her works of art form part of many private collections.
There will be a funeral service at St. John’s Anglican Church, 19 Don Ridge Drive, Toronto, Ontario , on Tuesday November 16 at 2 pm. to be followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association www.diabetes.ca. Condolences may be made at www.trullfuneralyonge.com
