Sister Denise Burns of the Congregation of Notre Dame died on May 4th 2024 in her 99th year. Denise was predeceased by her parents, James John Burns and Margaret Manley and seven siblings: Hugh (Jean), William (Cynthia), James (Stella), John Edward (Yvette), Margaret (Lloyd), Geraldine (Earl) and Gerard (Joan). She is survived by nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews, as well as cousins.
She will be fondly remembered by members of her religious community, the Congregation of Notre Dame, her former students and collaborators in ministry.
Sister Denise was born in Toronto and made her religious profession in 1951. In the following years, she dedicated her life to education in Toronto, Ottawa, Kingston and Westport. At the same time, she co authored a primary reading series entitled, “Mr. Mugs”.
Following her professional ministries, Sister Denise served in administration of CND communities in Kingston, Ottawa, Westport and Toronto.
Her last 11 years were lived with the sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto at 2 O’Connor where she received excellent care and genuine kindness. For this we are grateful to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto and the staff.
After cremation, friends will be received at the Rosar-Morrison Funeral Home on Tuesday May 14, 2024 at 467 Sherbourne St. from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with a prayer service at 7p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place at our Lady of Lourdes Church, located at 520 Sherbourne St. on Wednesday May 15, 2024 at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Thornhill, ON.
