Terence Fay of the Society of Jesus died on September 5 at Ajax-Pickering Hospital, Pickering, ON. Born in Syracuse, NY he was the son of Hugh Fay and Susan Dunne. He was 89 years old and was a Jesuit for 67 years. He was ordained on June 3, 1967. An historian by profession, from his research and reflection on the struggles of Canadian Catholics over four hundred years, Fr. Terry created the first comprehensive history of Catholics in Canada: A History of Canadian Catholics: Gallicanism, Romanism, and Canadianism. This was published by McGill University Press in 2002. In 2003 he published The New Faces of Canadian Catholics: The Filipinos, Chinese, and Tamils. He travelled in 2004 to the major Philippine islands interviewing 600 Filipinos. In 2009 he went back and spent several months at Ateneo de Manila University, Sogang University in Seoul, and Fu Jen University in Taipei. Fr. Terry enjoyed celebrating early Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. Not always engrossed in historical research, and blessed with an engaging personality, he undertook to organize the Catholic Engaged Encounter at the parish which annually provided spring and fall weekends since 1968 for forty-eight couples. On Saturday, September 11, at 10.00Am a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Toronto ON.
