I miss Terry’s passion as a professional and as an educator, and his dedication to family and friends. He left such an indelible mark on so many.


I am very sad to have just learned about Terry’s passing. He was a dynamo! Everything I learned about typography, I learned from Terry. To this day, whenever I watch films, I study the type, as he told us to pay attention – and every time I still think of him. Somewhere the heavens will be more beautifully lettered!

My heart goes out to the Iles family and friends, I am sorry I was unable to attend or see the service. Terry was one of the most memorable and favorite teachers I’ve ever had. I don’t have a picture of Terry to share, but he did create an ever lasting image in my mind that will never be erased.  Terry, who I often reference and also credit with helping me get into the biz, burned an important lesson about proper punctuation one late evening during his ad concepts class. An assignment for a billboard was due and everything was pinned on the wall for critique and review. Terry had a look of disgust and proceeded to walk up to one of the billboards and without hesitation, grabbed his pencil and said, “students! I don’t know how many times I have  to say this, but always put a period at the end of your headline!” Then with a violent swing of his arm and with full force, he stabbed the end of the headline with his pencil. Little did Terry know, years later periods went out of style and were no longer needed. It was not my billboard but needless to say after that, I always remembered to put periods at the end of a headline. A dedicated passionate ad person and teacher, forever etched in the back of my head. I loved that nice man.

Susan dear, I’m so very very sorry of your recent loss of your beloved Terrence. So many very happy memories from Staines Rd!

I am an OCAD alum and have to say Terry was the most terrific teacher I had in my life. His love for good advertising and craftsmanship was infectious. His influence and teaching led me to schooling and work in London England and on return his guidance and support led to many agency opportunities.
We met a number of times (I wish we had more time together)
When I started teaching the copywriters and art directors a course part-time at Humber he was my inspiration and role model for great teaching.
Terry, you are sadly missed -you were a true gent,
and Hall of Famer.

Terry was my instructor at OCAD and I can still remember the intensity of his class. From the minute he walked in to the minute it ended, it was a tidal wave of passion and emotion. And I am certain it all rubbed off because there were many times during my career in advertising where I would think about him; the laser focus he had for the minutia, the spaces between the words, the look and feel of a design and how something is communicated. He taught us when you needed to stand up, get behind something and fight for it. And the experience was as much about communication and design as it was about life. He really saw the best in people and knew how to bring it out of them -- he certainly brought the best out of me. I will miss you Terry.  

I loved working with Terry. He was kind and loved to laugh. In my mind's eye, I see Terry hunched over his art board, fussing with the tiny details that made his work so great. He fought for great work. He was a Hall of Famer. Thanks for everything, Terry. See you down the road.

I was in the doldrums trying to find work in my young advertising career. Matters didn't help when I came home to play my answering machine and the first message was from my mom harshly criticizing my choice for pursuing career as an art director.  Ouch!
The next message was from Terry offering me a job at McCann. Woo hoo!

Terry was one of the most inspiring and generous human beings I've ever known in my life. It was an honour and privilege to have known this great man.

Ah Terry.
So many memories working with you at McCann and DDB.  Your passion and your meticulous attention to detail was amazing for each ad you art directed.
I remember Les Usherwood coming in to discuss type and a half hour would turn into an hour or longer!  Every week I would remind him that he was late for his OCA class which started at 4:00pm - Babs call them and post a note on the door telling my students I ‘ll be there soon.
I loved his stories of his cottage, boxing, fishing.
Will always remember you as one of my boys.

Susan, Erin, Gillian and families,  I was sorry to read of Terry's death but glad to see further suffering ended. Terry's birthday was the same as my father's, who also had dementia, and I know it is so tragic when a brilliant mind no longer functions well. I'm sure you have many great memories as well as tangible items he created and I hope they will comfort and sustain you in the days ahead.  Terry touched many lives. Thank you for sharing him with others.

Few people in advertising touched me more deeply than Terry Isles. He was an innocent soul, unaware of his dramatic influence on others. He was one of Canada's greatest art directors.  One of this country's most gifted and passionate graphic arts teachers.  His classes filled up faster than anyone else in the graphic arts department at OCADU, including my own.  His students adored him. For his vast knowledge; his limitless generosity. His obsession for perfection was wide ranged and unwavering. With equal ease,  he could speak on art,  writing,
boxing, films, birding, fishing. Whatever took his fancy, Terry threw himself into the topic with a passionate obsession. 
Of all his qualities, it was his purity of heart that I held in highest regard. 
So, for one last time I say,
 "Terrance Iles, I love you."





I’ll always remember your dad. He left such a heartwarming legacy with his family, and I’ll miss him too. Sending love and prayers to you.

Terry was instrumental in launching the careers of many illustrators, myself included. Working with him gave much credibility in the industry. He was a very patient and caring mentor who loved the Advertising business,... and his  successes are a direct  result of his  dedication and commitment. I also had the good fortune to associate with him at OCAD. He will be missed.



In 1988 Terry,Took a chance,... and hired me as a on staff Illustrator for the Ad firm Y&R ... He taught me everything I know today... He was a GIANT in the industry and a Heart to match.Many hours we spoke of classical illustration and his knowledge was truly immense.I always considered him to be my mentor and gave me direction with Hope.
He is dearly loved by a great many.

I will never forget him.

Terry was one of the finest Art Directors in the creative advertising community. We shared many shoots together both in studio and across Canada and his passion for his art was undeniable.
A super sensitive human being who really cared,  and would readily involve you in decisions and respect your opinions.
I thank you for the numerous awards that we garnished together over the years. 
Very fitting that you should receive the Les Usherwood  Award as I  spent many hours with you,  Les Usherwood and Bob Karmen discussing the execution of a project before actually shooting it.
I really wish I had photos to share of us from shoots in Calgary, Vancouver, Whitehorse, Montreal and Detroit, but regardless I can still see that adorable face in everyone of those locations.
And the endless hours that we would spend on studio shoots as thankfully we were both perfectionists! 
RIP pal and hopefully we can connect on another plane as I often think about you and wonder how you are.

Terry was a true original, and for 25 years he was a rite of passage for all of the students graduating from the OCA(D) Advertising program. He helped to build the strongest Ad program in Canada, and shape multiple generations of creative Directors in Canada. OCAD, and the Ad industry owe him a huge debt of gratitude. He touched the lives of so many in a positive way, and the impact he had is still felt, and will be for years to come. 

Terry was a lovely man, a joy to be around and a guy you can't forget. His talent, of course goes without saying. Beyond the subject of art direction for advertising he'd love to talk about the visual arts in general; we both had a nostalgic love for atom age comic book illustrators for example and would share our favourite pulp titles with one another. Thoughtful, passionate, inspirational and honest, Terry will be missed by many. My condolences to his family; my thoughts are with you.

Terry was a passionate and inspiring teacher. He loved advertising. When I get beaten down by this business, I think back to his class, and listen to his encouraging words. “Alan, advertising is like boxing, you get knocked down, but you get right back up and fight harder than ever.” 
He was a lovely man. He was a legend.

I knew of Terry throughout my career and as Dad to Erin but I got to know him as a fellow teacher at OCAD. He is everything everyone has described here and more. He was very encouraging to me as a new Instructor and supportive of everything that the department was trying to accomplish at OCAD under the leadership of Peter, Steven, and Lenore. His passion and curiosity was infectious to everyone in his presence. I hope it brings great comfort and joy to Susan, Erin and Gillian knowing how much he was valued.



Terry was my teacher at OCA, and became my mentor. His passion for advertising was contagious, and Terry is the reason I chose it as my profession. He was an extraordinary art director, one of the best in the world. And that same excellence extended itself to his teaching skills. What a tremendous loss. My condolences to his family.  

I had a long-standing admiration of Terry and his wonderful patience with students. He was a dedicated teacher who gave all of his energy to help students develop and succeed. Many days when classes were ending and students leaving the school,  you would find Terry still working with several students who patiently waited for his wisdom. 
Rest in Peace Terry.

I don’t know whether Terry was my Art Director….or I was his writer, back at McCann-Erickson in a previous millennium. (Okay, I was his writer.) But the depth and breadth and wisdom and taste he brought to everything we did was an absolute inspiration. Nothing Terry did was treated with less than a total, focused and obsessive commitment to perfection. Oddly, on the journey to creative ideas, Terry would embrace every detour and distraction imaginable while exploring every creative possibility. But once we arrived at the ever elusive idea, he was a laser beam. As a friend, however, he was as soft and sweet and kind as crème brulée. I believe Terry’s energy will continue beyond this world. Wherever that may be, they will surely welcome his arrival. 

Terry was a magnificent creative partner of mine at DDB.
We did some outstanding work together, and Terry taught me
many lessons on how to do great creative. I remember once when
Terry got furious about misplacing his glasses. After looking everywhere for them, and after much banging around his office,
I told Terry to look on his head. Sure enough, that's where the glasses were. You left us with many fond memories and we will
miss you deeply.

I have nothing but happy memories of Terry. The first time I met him was at the art directors show in Montreal on the island. It was late and we were all exiting the grounds looking for for cabs. Terry who obviously had been celebrating his awards found a cab just sitting there with his lights on. Terry went to get into the back seat but he couldn’t open the door so he banged on the door and swore at the cab driver to open the door. What he soon was discover was it wasn’t a cab but a police car. We had many laughs together over the years regarding that event. He will be missed.
