Rev. Thomas Francis Mohan, C.S.B.

Peacefully at Princess Margaret Hospital on Sunday, December 8, 2013 following a struggle for months with leukemia. He was born August 4, 1929 in London, ON, the seventh of 10 children to Peter Mohan and Anne Nesbitt. Predeceased by siblings John Mohan, Peter Mohan, Betty Armstrong, Margaret MacDonald, Yvonne Meeihan and Bill Mohan.Tom met the Basilian Fathers while attending St. Michael’s College School in Toronto. He was professed in the Congregation of St. Basil in 1951. He then obtained his BA at Assumption College, Windsor in 1954. He was ordained a priest on June 28, 1959. Before his ordination he taught for a year each at Aquinas Institute, Rochester, NY and at Assumption College School, Windsor. After his ordination, beginning in 1960 he was assigned for 12 years as a teacher and then principal at Michael Power H.S., Toronto, seven years as founding principal at Fr. Henry Carr H.S., Toronto and two years as principal at Don Bosco Secondary, Toronto. In 1981 he became an associate superintendent for the Calgary Catholic School District for 12 years. During this time he worked tirelessly towards the founding of the University of St. Mary’s College, Calgary. From 1993 to 2000 he rebuilt St. Michael’s College School as its principal. He spent 13 years in semi-retirement at Henry Carr Farm, Beeton, ON. On top of all this, Tom was the chaplain for all of Canada of the Canadian Catholic School Trustees for 25 years. He is survived by three siblings: Mary (Molly) McConkey, Michael Mohan and Patricia Taylor and 39 nieces and nephews. Special thanks to the wonderful and caring staff at Princess Margaret Hospital. There will be a visitation on Tuesday, December 10 from 2 to 5 PM and at 6:30 PM with a wake service at 7:30 PM in the Chapel of the Cardinal Flahiff Basilian Center, 95 St. Joseph Street, Toronto. Visitation will also be held on Wednesday, December 11 from 9 AM followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in St. Basil’s Church, 50 St. Joseph Street, Toronto. Burial will be at the Basilian plot at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Thornhill, ON. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Basilian Fathers Retirement Fund, 95 St. Joseph Street, Toronto,ON, M5S 3C2.
