Catherine Marie Hand

December 14, 1941 – June 12, 2025

Catherine Marie Hand (née Porter) passed away peacefully at her home in Gardena, California, on June 12, 2025, at the age of 83. Born on December 14, 1941, in Berkeley, California, Catherine was a vibrant woman who cherished her family, her Catholic faith, and all things Disney.

As a young woman, Catherine had a deep love for figure skating and spent many joyful hours on the ice in Berkeley—where she would later meet the love of her life, Fred Hand, at the local rink. They married in 1960 and shared 64 wonderful years together.

A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Catherine is survived by her beloved husband, Fred Hand; her two children, Kelly Hand Crow of Dallas, Texas, and Brett Hand of Big Bear, California; and seven grandchildren—Thomas, Gregory, Adela, and Jane Crow, and Aiden, Austin, and Calvin Hand—who brought her immense joy.

Catherine was a gifted homemaker and a tireless volunteer at Saint Catherine Labouré School, where she served for more than 25 years. With Fred, she pioneered the school’s ballroom dance and physical education programs, acted as school nurse, and was the creative force behind countless school play sets and backdrops.

Her greatest joy came from her role as grandmother. She could always be found on the sidelines of performances, and at every milestone her grandchildren celebrated. Catherine will be remembered for her boundless energy, generous heart, and unwavering devotion to her family and community.

A Rosary will be held on Friday, June 27, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 3:00 p.m., at Saint Catherine Labouré Catholic Church, 3846 Redondo Beach Boulevard, Torrance, California. A reception will follow the funeral in the church annex.
