
MADISON, JAMES ''MADDY'' DeCUIR, longtime resident of Gardena passed away on Nov. 13, 2004 at the age of 77. He was born on June 14, 1927 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. A veteran of WWII and Korea, he served as mess sergeant which entailed cooking for hundereds of troops which prepared him for cooking for his family and the annual Christmas Eve dinner.
Being a shoe repairman was his trade but being a consumate showman was his syle. He owned and operated the DeCuir Family Shoe Repair business for over 50 years, learning his trade by working side-by-side with his father, Joseph Hennessy DeCuir. After 'retiring' and closing up the shop, Madison went to work as a part-time security guard.
He was a local fixture of the Democratic Club of Gardena and as sunshine chairman of the Remarrieds Club, Maddy wrote and performed songs to fit any and all occasions.
Madison is survived by his children, Hennessy, Celeste, Terry, Michele and grandchildren, Janae, Sean, Juan' and Taylor.
Memorial services with military honors will be held on Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004 at 11:00 AM at RICE MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5310 Torrance Blvd., Torrance, CA 90503, followed by a reception at the same location.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to contribute in Maddy's memory are encouraged to do so by directing contributions to his grandchildren's educational fund in care of Celeste Leavelle at 7605 Hickory Ave., Orangevale, CA 95662.
