Joan (Baker) Huber, 86, Torrance, CA, formerly of Beulah, ND, died on Monday, May 11, 2015 at Torrance Memorial Medical Center. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church of Torrance, with reception following.
Joan Baker was born on January 16, 1929 in Fingal, ND to Henry John Baker and Myrtle (Beck) Baker. As a child, she enjoyed tap dance and was adored by her two brothers, Burrel and Lloyd. Joan worked in the downtown drugstore soda fountain, where she developed and passed along to her family a love of "Muds". Joan attended Beulah High School, where she met the love of her life, Leo Huber. They married on July 18, 1948 and, after honeymooning, helped in the family's Huber Food Market in Beulah.
The couple moved to Southern California in 1955, where Leo pursued a career in the grocery business and Joan became a homemaker and active member of the EUB Church. They bought a home, had two daughters, and remained in Torrance until Leo's company transferred to Salt Lake City, UT.
Joan joined and actively participated in United Methodist Church UMW groups and spent her spare time visiting and tending to elderly parishioners. Her favorite pastimes were shopping, collecting antiques, cooking, and singing in the church choir and other choral groups.
Leo retired from Smith's Food King in 1993, and the couple returned to condo life in Torrance, CA to be closer to their daughters and grandchildren.
Leaving her devoted husband of 66 years, Leo R. Huber, to mourn, Mrs. Huber is also survived by daughters Darsha Huber and Karma Bombe, son-in-law Gerhard Bombe, grandchildren Sherri Weldon, Mark Hultgren and Kaard Bombe, in addition to six great-grandchildren. May her soul rest in peace.
