Leo was born to Katie (Unruh) and Daniel Huber of Beulah, ND on November 30, 1927. He had an older brother Reinhold and his younger sister Bernice (Huber) Rath lives in AZ.
Leo was raised in a grocery store atmosphere, watching his father butcher animals and process meat to sell in their market. At age 6, would "candle eggs" (over a can with a light bulb) and at age 17, he began managing Huber's Food Market due to his father's declining health.
Leo played the trombone, basketball and football at Beulah High, where he later refereed. He married his high school sweetheart and lifelong love Joan Baker in 1948, bought a house in town and continued to run the market until its sale in 1952. He then clerked in hardware, sold Quonset huts and cars at two competing dealerships, until the latter dissolved in 1956.
With his young daughters Darsha and Karma in tow, Leo packed up his family and headed for Southern California to "live the dream." His skills and knowledge from the family store secured him a job as grocery clerk - starting 3 days after their move! Due to his dedication and hard work, he advanced across various market chains into a Store Manager position for Food Giant. Working long hours allowed them to buy a home in Torrance, where they raised their girls and lived until he was transferred to Smith's Food King Corporate in SLC, Utah as their Safety Director.
Leo thrived in his Corporate responsibilities and retired in 1993. He and his "Little Mrs." moved back to Torrance in 2001, into a condo close to their daughters for their golden years.
He had loved his work, but his true joy and happiness came from his family. He lived for his "3 girls," and with the addition of grandkids and great grandkids, his hopes and dreams in life were fulfilled.
Leo's last home was in a loving elder facility, wherein the owners and dedicated caregivers showered him daily with compassion and kindness, enhancing and prolonging his life. Leo will be remembered for his eternal love and devotion to his family, his sense of humor and his big heart!
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Joan, brother Reine and great granddaughter Lindsey Weldon.
Leo is survived by daughter Darsha Huber (Hultgren), daughter Karma (Huber) Bombe and son-in-law Gerhard Bombe, sister Bernice (Huber) Rath, granddaughter Sherri (Hultgren) Weldon, grandsons Mark Hultgren and Kaard Bombe, and 5 great grandchildren.
