Louis is predeceased by his mother Mary Stockberger, whose family published the Santa Monica Evening Outlook, his father Louis E. DeWitt Sr., a one time blacklisted motion picture artist and movie producer, and his sister Marilyn Sturino.
Louis grew up in Brentwood, and attended Blackfox Academy, Brentwood Academy, and University High School, where he left before graduation to enlist in the United States Marines. After his military service, Louis began law school at the University of San Fernando Valley, graduating in 1972. He was one of the few, if any, practicing lawyers in California without a high school diploma. He was then hired as an assistant prosecutor for the City of Los Angeles. Leaving the prosecutor's office, Louis became an associate lawyer for famed trial lawyer Archer Zamloch Esq., where he began an active criminal and civil injury trial practice. When Louis left Zamloch, he founded a firm briefly with friend Richard Rossen. For the last thirty years he practiced with Mark Algorri and Ernest Algorri under the name of DeWitt Algorri & Algorri, having offices in Pasadena and Torrance. He tried over a hundred cases to verdict during his career. Louis was an associate of the American Board of Trail Advocates, a member of the President's Club of the Consumer Attorneys of California, and a member of the Pasadena Bar Association. Louis also volunteered many years of his professional time sitting as a Judge Pro Tem for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in the traffic court of the Torrance Courthouse. Louis was loved and respected by his clients and colleagues alike, and was the consummate professional in all aspects of his dealings with the court and countless opposing counsel.
Louis was a true gentleman and generous with all. He was a talented musician and artist and enjoyed boating and tennis in his leisure time. Louis was an incredible father and dedicated soccer Dad.
He is survived by his son Robert, 24, daughter Megan, 22, former wife Robyn, and numerous friends and associates.
A memorial service will be on Monday, December 14th , 4PM, at Rice Mortuary in Torrance. A celebration of Louis life will follow at ZaZou restaurant in Riviera Village.
