Norma Lucille Day, longtime South Bay resident and graduate of Redondo Union High School, passed away on January 10, 2023 at Caring House in Torrance following a year-long stay at Belmont Village Senior Living in Rancho Palos Verdes. Norma was born June 19, 1937 in Concord, California, to Laura (Blausey) Edwin and Lawrence (Perry) Edwin, both of whom had also graduated from Redondo High.
When Norma was still young, her family returned to the South Bay where she would reside for over 80 years. While at Redondo High, Norma excelled in both academics and athletics. After graduating in 1955, she attended UC Berkeley, then married the love of her life, Ron Day, in 1957. She and Ron celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary shortly before his death in 2017.
Norma spent her career as a full-time mom and supporter of her husband in the family businesses, White & Day Mortuaries and Pacific Crest Cemetery. After raising their three children, she and Ron enjoyed traveling extensively with friends and family. Norma was also active on RUHS reunion committees for many years. A life-long member of the First United Methodist Church of Redondo Beach, she and Ron sang in the choir for decades and hosted many choir parties and various church meetings.
Norma entertained frequently and was known as the perfect hostess and etiquette expert. She was thoughtful, generous, and genuinely interested in others. She was known for her great sense of humor and infectious laugh. Norma had a sharp mind and impressive memory, from which she often drew Jeopardy-worthy facts and trivia. More than anything, she was extremely proud of her family, which ultimately grew to include ten grandchildren and four (soon to be six) great granddaughters.
Norma is survived by her children: Mindy (John) Kirk of Redondo Beach, John (Claudia) Day of Santa Barbara, and Annette (Scott) Godfrey of Poway, as well as her sister, Lois Pemberton of Nipomo, sister-in-law Pam Day of Lake Arrowhead, and sister-in-law Cheryl Day of Arroyo Grande. She is also survived by ten grandchildren: Christopher (Jen Plummer) Kirk, Lauren (Kevin) Figgers, Brian (Laura) Kirk, Ashley Day, Julie (Jordan) Harber, Emily (Gilbert) Tercero, Andrew Day, Ryan (Kyra) Godfrey, Samuel (Nicolet) Godfrey, and Jill Godfrey, along with great granddaughters Luna Tercero, Darcie Harber, Savannah Kirk, and Cassidy Kirk.
