1928 - 2006
Dick never knew a stranger.
Born May 15, 1928 in Penn Yan, New York, Dick Rector attended Penn Yan Academy until he joined the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Providence. After his honorable discharge, Dick studied air conditioning and heating until he moved to North Hollywood. From there he mailed Edy O'Connell an engagement ring and brought out his Keuka College graduate bride to California in 1955. Their only daughter, Pam, arrived that November and the Rectors moved to the South Bay so Dick could work at the Redondo Beach Power Plant. He then moved on to work for the Los Angeles Unified School District where he eventually retired as an Area Maintenance Director after 29 years.
Anybody who knew Dick enjoyed his generous spirit and sense of humor. He made those around him feel welcome, strangers and as well as friends. Dick was actively involved in the Hollywood Riviera Sportsman's Club, the Walteria Businessmen's Association, the LAUSD Classified Retired Employees Association and the USS Providence Association.
Dick and his wife Edy enjoyed 47 years of marriage filled with good friends, travel and golf until Edy passed away in 2002. If you knew Dick you couldn't help but know about his daughter Pam and his granddaughter Gracie, his pride and joy, he loved to spend time with her whenever he could showing her off to all his friends. His family expanded to include Pam's former Lennox students, Alejandra, Arelly, George, and German, who called him Grandpa. He will be missed by his cherished friends and his girlfriend, Veronica. Dick's memory will live on in the stories told by his brother, Alan, sisters-in-law, Esther and Joyce Rector, his many nieces and nephews, his daughter Pam and his granddaughter Grace Rector.
Dick's life will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 13 at 4:00 p.m. in Sacred Heart Chapel at Loyola Marymount University. In lieu of flowers and in Dick's spirit of supporting youth, contributions in Dick's name can be made to LMU's Center for Service and Action or the Hollywood Riviera Sportsman's Club Benevolent Fund.
