Sidney was born May 3, 1945 in Oto, Iowa, to Frank and Elnora (Moss) Sawin. He completed the first 10 years of his schooling in the Oto/Anthon school district, before moving to Fort Bragg, CA and completing his high school education, graduating May 1963. He continued his education graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Cal State University, Northridge in June, 1967. Upon graduation, he entered public accounting by joining a national CPA firm, Seidman & Seidman (currently known as BDO Seidman). After six years, he left public accounting for employment in the private sector with a NYSE company, Sony/Superscope. Again after six years, he realized that he enjoyed public accounting more, and therefore left to pursue a career in public accounting. He formed a partnership with Don Hedrick, a good friend and college classmate. The CPA firm, Hedrick and Sawin was created and this business entity lasted for over 30 years. Hedrick and Sawin had two offices: Don ran the Santa Monica office, and Sid ran the Long Beach office. When Don retired in 2006, Sid entered into a new partnership with Craig Kotani, and the firm was now called Sawin and Kotani.
To say he thoroughly enjoyed his career was an understatement. When talking about public accounting, this is his own words: "I would encourage and recommend that you would consider the same career path. The primary reasons are the enjoyment of working with the clients to assist in the achievement of their goals which contributes greatly to a tremendous degree of self-satisfaction and job fulfillment and best of all you are financially rewarded for the fun that you experience in working with your client."
Even more than his accounting career, Sid loved his family. He was the youngest of seven children and was very close with his siblings: one older sister, and five older brothers. With his first wife, Sheila (Pitt) Sawin, Sid had two children, Helene and Vicki. He was extremely proud of his two daughters. In 1991, Sid married Linda (Daniels) Sawin – together, in their free time, they have enjoyed traveling and RV trips in their motor home. Sid's other hobbies included Hot Rod cars, showing off his bright yellow 1933 Ford at car shows, and attending auto auctions. Sid was a wonderful grandfather and got so much joy from spending time with his three grandchildren, Sydney, Joshua, and Jack. It should also be noted that Sid had a tender spot for the dogs that he has had throughout his life, but he has said that his current dog, a bulldog named Molly, is the best dog he's ever had.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Sawin, Redondo Beach, CA; daughters Helene Rosenthal (John) of Sherman Oaks, CA; Vicki Davis (Jason) of Woodland Hills, CA ; three grandchildren Sydney Frances Rosenthal, Joshua Perry Rosenthal, and Jack Benjamin Rosenthal; Linda's granddaughter, Brittany Felmly; one brother, Sherman Sawin and wife, Gloria, from Anaheim Hills, CA; and one sister, Marian Groussman, and husband, Max, from Anaheim; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Alvern Sawin in 1985, Charles Sawin in 1983, Robert Sawin in 2007, and Pierce Sawin in 2003.
