Sr. Barbara Anne was born in Santa Monica, California. Her mother had brought the family to California to be near family members who had moved from Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania. When Barbara was five, the family returned to Philadelphia. She returned again to Los Angeles and attended Mount St Mary’s. In 1948, Barbara entered community and received the name, Sister Barbara Mary.
During her years teaching at Bishop Conaty High School, Barbara Mary realized “that the education of girls was a calling I could answer with joy.”
Sister served in Japan for 52 years, as teacher, principal, and chair of the school board. She loved her years there and often spoke of the “exquisite beauty of ancient Kyoto and the great resilience of people. Sister was greatly loved and admired.
Sister Barbara Mary had a great love for classical art, literature and music. Her love of the congregation was obvious as she extended gracious and generous hospitality to all who visited or who ministered with her.
May she rest in peace.
