Sue Albrecht Johnson passed away quietly at her home in Manhattan Beach, California, on Sunday, January 30, 2022, while getting ready to join her best friend to watch the football playoffs. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on October 11, 1949, Sue received a bachelor’s degree from Wittenberg University (Ohio) and a master’s degree from Kent State University (Ohio).
She was a beloved middle school math teacher for 25 years in the Cleveland area. As an avid puzzle solver and developer, Sue tried to incorporate many types of puzzles into her daily classroom activities. She received Teacher of the Year awards from both the Greater Cleveland Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Besides presenting several workshops in the United States, she also shared her knowledge and excitement of teaching with educators in Ecuador, Columbia, Guatemala, Mexico, and Australia.
Sue used her math skills in a variety of ways. For the sport of Synchronized Swimming, she was the U.S. National Scoring Chair for many years. FINA, the international swimming federation, selected Sue as their Chief Recorder (in charge of scoring and results) for seven Summer Olympics starting in 1984, as well as for several World Championships. She was honored by the International Swimming Hall of Fame, receiving their 2013 Paragon Award for Synchronized Swimming for her international work in the sport. In addition, Sue was in charge of Scoring Central for the US Open, US Women’s Open, and US Senior Open Golf Championships each year, as well as several other PGA Tour Events.
Sue had the joy of meeting and working for Harry Johnson during the 1984 Summer Olympics in LA. They dated cross-country for several years, then were married on December 7, 1996. Sue adored living in the house Harry built in Manhattan Beach, California. They enjoyed traveling together and helping to raise Harry’s children and grandchildren. Sadly, Harry passed away in 2014. Sue considered his daughter, Cindy Braden (Santa Barbara, California), her children and their families as her own. Along with Cindy, Sue is survived by Brittany and Zack Paris, their new son Calvin, and Christopher and Savannah Braden.
Music was always another of Sue’s loves. Besides always singing faithfully in her church and school choirs, Sue sang with the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus for 18 years. She was also the proud author of two popular reproducible music puzzle books: Music Fun 101 and Music Puzzler, both published by Alfred Music. Sue was active at American Martyrs Catholic Church and with The Rotary Club of Redondo Beach.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Dick and Mary Jane Albrecht of Pepper Pike, Ohio and Ft. Myers, Florida. Sue is survived by her three younger siblings: Barb Hocking (Scott, Greenville, South Carolina), Sally Albrecht (Jay Althouse, Raleigh, North Carolina), and Bill Albrecht (Kathleen, Neenah, Wisconsin), along with a quartet of nieces and nephews, and a quintet of their offspring.
In lieu of flowers, the family recommends that donations be made in Sue’s memory to The Rotary Club of Redondo Beach Community Foundation, Alzheimer’s Los Angeles, or a charity of your choice.
