While still in the 11th grade, and 17 years old, Lee joined the U.S. Navy in 1942. His N.E.C. was Range Finder. He participated in many hot battles in the Gilbert Islands, Wake Island, and Leyte Gulf—just to name a few. In February of 1944, his battleship, the USS West Virginia, made a stop for repairs in Bremerton Washington, where he met Vada Isabelle Wilson.
Lee and Vada married in April of 1946 in Port Orchard, Washington. They raised their family in Gardena, California. Lee joined the Pacific Telephone Company in 1948, and the couple went on to have three children: Caren Lee, Susan Lynn, and Steven Leslie.
Lee loved the river and was an avid water skier. The family often spent summers boating and skiing with family and many dear friends over the years. After retiring from Pacific Telephone in 1983, Lee and Vada toured Europe; and in 1986-87, moved into a 35 foot Diplomat Motorhome visiting most of the United States, their capitals, major cities, and took many tours.
Lee was known for his brilliant mind and ability to remember just about everything he ever learned. The family would laugh and marvel at his many stories, given in such detail, well into his 90s. He has a few unpublished works dedicated to his ancestors, family, and progeny. Lee loved genealogy and could date his ancestry back to 1569, Devonshire England.
Most importantly, Lee Andrus was a Christian man who loved the Lord Jesus Christ. A member of Bayview Baptist Church, he attended every Sunday until it was no longer physically possible. But, made sure to be instant in prayer, Bible-reading, and special prayers and support for missionaries the church supports.
Lee is survived by his wife, Vada; his son Steve (Amelia), his brother Ernest, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great, great-grandson, Luke. He is preceded in death by his brother, John; daughters, Caren and Susan; grandsons, Jeff and Brian; and his parents.
