

Floyd E. Hunt, age 74, of Elmwood Twp. passed away Sunday, December 11, 2011 at his home with his family at his side. He was born July 25, 1937 in Traverse City to Ralph and Molly (Rumbach) Hunt. Floyd graduated from Traverse City Central High School in 1955. While in high school he was a member of the F.F.A. He was a past president of the Northwestern Michigan Farm Bureau, a past member of the Michigan Manufactured Housing Association, and Elmwood Township Planning Commission.
Floyd spent his entire life on the family dairy and cherry farm in Leelanau County. He also formerly owned and operated Birch Point Mobile Home Park in Leelanau County. As a young man Floyd delivered produce and drove a milk truck besides working the farm with his dad. He raced motorcycles and cruised the roads of Leelanau County with his buddies Larry Price and Lloyd Britton. He also enjoyed working on automobiles, riding snowmobile, and traveling. He loved being outdoors and cutting firewood so much that he became known by his family as the “Wood Fairy”. He was a jack of all trades who could build a house from the ground up. It was never a quick trip to town with him since he knew everyone and liked to talk and catch up with all those he ran into.
On December 30, 1963 Floyd married Helen (Belanger) Barnes and together they raised 9 children: Connie (George) Preston, Lisa (Patrick) Gallagher, Carrie (John) Sullivan, Paula Hunt, Deborah Barnes(Michael) Schmuckal, Reuben (Becky) Barnes, Mary Barnes (Gary) Richter, Thomas (Kelly) Barnes, and Colleen Barnes (Don) Gallagher. On February 9, 1999 Floyd married Beverly Grougan and gained 7 more children. Floyd is also survived by 39 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren
Besides his parents, Floyd was preceded in death by his wife Helen in 1998 and his brother and sister-in-law Leroy and Kathleen Hunt.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, December 14, 2011 from 3-5pm and 6:30 to 8:30 pm, with a scripture service at 7:30 pm at the Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, December 15, 2011 at 3pm at St. Francis Catholic Church, with visitation 1 hour prior. Burial will take place at Oakwood Catholic Cemetery at 11am on Saturday, December 17, 2011. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools.
