Missing Aunt Hope, my mother's beloved younger sister. I was named for her and have tried to live up to her talent and energy and courage. She comforted us when we lost our mother. May this message sent with love bring comfort to her family.

Our Aunt Hope was my mother's beloved younger sister. I was honored to be named for her.  We grew up with stories of her beauty and talent and courage. She comforted us when we lost our mother.  I'm sorry we couldn't travel during these difficult times to comfort her family. May our love and prayers help to carry you through pain and loss, knowing that she has gone home now to the Lord she served so faithfully in this life, Hope and Stephen Phillips

I am sending this to give my condolences and to say how sad I was to hear that Mrs. Hope (Esperanca) was taken to the arms of the Father.

I will always remember her with much love and admiration. I keep one memory of her from when I was 5 years old at a retreat at the fazenda of Pedro Jorge in Pentecoste when I tripped over the trunk of a tree and she removed many tiny splinters of wood which had entered in my leg  using a little tweezers. I remember her tenderness and her serenity with each gesture, even while I was crying, I remember so clearly because I had never seen anyone so sweet and that marked my life much.

Then at later time meeting her at the airport in Atlanta she, though fragile at the time, maintained that sweetness and enchantment which she always had. She was a wonderful woman and whenever I speak of you to others I always tell them how I have never known people so sweet and it so good to be near them. 

I thank God so much for you having had a part in my life, and it comforts me to know she is now in a place which is much better and where one day we will meet. I hope some day to be able to give you a big hug personally, who knows!




My mother and I did not always see eye to eye, and there were periods in our lives when we had a rocky relationship especially in my teen years.  But thru all the ups and downs i realize that she always tried her best to love me and guide me the best she knew how.  There are so many things that my mother taught me and left me with that to this day continue to keep me grounded and wise.  I miss her but I know one day we will all be together with her celebrating new life!  Love you Mom!

Thinking of you Uncle Frank and all of your family. I know fond memories will provide you comfort and joy. Aunt Hope will always be remembered for her life well lived and I will always remember her warmth and kindness. Thanks to all who contributed the wonderful photographs. My Aunt Hope Abigail was the only sister of my mother Peggy who adored her.  Although we lived so far away from the Arnold family in Brazil while we lived in Pakistan all my childhood years, Aunt Hope continued to have a large place in our hearts.  My deepest sympathy to her wonderful family who loved her dearly.  She was a special person who shared her life with, not only her family, but also many people that she helped to have better lives.  She was caring and kind.  I remember her with love.  May the memories of her life and the times we had together stay with us with love, Esther

My mother was an amazing woman. She had more energy and perseverance than most people I have met in my lifetime. After all, she took a 5 year old, a 3 year old and a 9 month old baby to Brazil to begin what would be a 35 year career as a missionary along with our dear dad. She had 2 more children during their time there. She taught me everything I know about housekeeping, cooking and raising children. She also taught me a lot about being mentally and physically strong.  Nothing ever seemed too difficult for her and she never seemed to lack energy. In fact, sometimes her boundless energy and perseverance just made me want to take a nap.  I miss her dearly, but I am also thankful that she has been released from her earthly mind and body and that she is whole again. I love you Mom. Your daughter, Deb

Dear Frank and family,

I am Carol Hightower of North Avenue Church and I just want to say what a blessing it was  to meet  your mom.  She was a radiant Christian and I could see through her why she has such a great family and each of you reflects her faith, hope and love.  We were all blessed to have met her and know about her radiant life .  I pray for your comfort and peace and that the Lord will bless each of you as you miss her presence in your lives. This verse reminds me of her as I pray, "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you turst in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." Romans 15:13

Hope is my mother-in-law. She is very kind and very loving to me. She welcomed me to her family and treated me as her own daughter. I treasured a lot of good memories because we live very close to each other and we spent time together on vacation a couple times a year. She amazed me at how much time she spent caring for her family and she did it very well. She loved her family and she prayed for them. She also amazed me how she can prayed perfectly even during the years of her suffering from Alzheimer’s. She couldn’t carry on a conversation but she could pray her heart out to God. I missed her!

I thank God for having given me Hope, my faithful, beautiful and wonderful wife and companion of 63 years. That farm girl from Iowa came into my life when she came to the big city of Philadelphia to become a nurse and was introduced to me by a mutual friend. Later the favor was returned when we introduced that friend to the man who would become her husband for over 60 years. I confess to shedding tears while reading the many cards I have received. The best tribute I can give to her is to share some of the comments from those who knew her:
"she was my first mentor at our church, such a wonderful person...I'm fortunate to have known her...she was always cheerful and had good advice to share ....we rejoice that she will spend Easter with her risen Lord...God blessed you with this wonderful helpmate, soulmate and mother... she spread warm feelings wherever she went...Hope was one of my heroes who welcomed me when I was new...what a beautiful life partner you had in Hope...will always be remembered by me as a kind and loving lady...she had boundless energy, whether it was climbing a ladder or cleaning... (something she did a lot!)... will be missed by so many who loved and admired her...not only beautiful in looks but also in spirit...Hope was such a sweet woman who always thought of others and so committed to you and to her children...we have treasured memories of a God-filled woman...and her gift of hospitality...such a good cook and gracious hostess...a much better housekeeper than I...a friend to all and such a woman of faith...will always remember your beautiful Hope...a great example to all of us ladies.. and the mother of a very fine family...happy that she is whole and well in the presence of her Savior...your intelligent and lovely wife...grateful for her role in our lives...a beautiful example to us......her soft voice, her love of family and her devotion to you...such a dear lady and will be sorely missed."

I also miss my Mom greatly and think of how faithfully she guided me and my siblings all through the years.  She always had a heart to reach out to the poor and needy as was especially evident in her being a missionary wife and mother.  And the fact that she was willing to have and to raise five children alone shows that she was pretty extraordinary!  So I will always remember her with great love and give thanks to the Lord for allowing me the privilege to call her my Mom!  She was also the most wonderful example of a loving wife to my dear Dad as I know he could expound on.

We miss Mom terribly but are so thankful that she now has a perfect mind and body and is non-stop worshiping and enjoying being with her Father.  We're also grateful to so many family members and friends who've expressed their love, support and prayers for us and our dad during this time.
