Marion Rochon Forstall of Stone Mountain Georgia passed away Tuesday, February 1st, 2022 at the age of eighty-six. She was born May 7th, 1935 in New Iberia, Louisiana. Marion was one of eight children and attended elementary and high school in New Iberia and Straights Business School in New Orleans Louisiana where she was trained to perform as a professional secretary using typing, shorthand and secretarial skills which enabled her to function as a personal executive secretary in the city of New Orleans. She graduated from Lehman College in New York in 1980 where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and Master’s Degree in Deaf Education and Learning Disabilities. She worked thirteen years from 1980 to 1993 at the New York School for the Deaf; also known as Fanwood School for the Deaf. During her tenure at Fanwood she was recognized for her excellence in working with deaf children and teenagers who struggled with mastering subject matter while simultaneously trying to overcome their speech and hearing challenges. Marion was very passionate about working with her students to help them recognize and overcome cultural and racial biases confronting them as minorities in addition to their auditory obstacles. Marion was lovingly known at Fanwood as the faculty human and civil rights advocate! She retired from Fanwood in 1993 and relocated to Stone Mountain Georgia where she was joined by her beloved husband Lionel when he retired in 1994.
Marion was preceded in death by her mother Nellie Rochon, her step-mother Virgin Rochon, her father Homer Rochon, her sister Myrtle Woodruff, and brothers Leo, Louis, Lawrence and Paul Rochon. Marion is survived by her husband Dr. Lionel Forstall, her sons Rodney and Kweku Forstall and her younger siblings, brother Larry Rochon and his wife Elder Deborah P. Rochon and sister Barbara Rochon. She is also survived by three beautiful nurturing grand-daughters Ayaan Forstall, Kaya Forstall, Cailey Forstall Rash and her husband Caleb Rash, and attentive and loving daughters-in-law Fawn Johnson and Adrienne Forstall.
Marion was stricken with Alzheimer's disease in 2009 and survived 13 years of challenges confronting her as a result of the disease; she was a fighter to be reckoned with. The Forstalls are a close knit family who provided Marion with unconditional love and support throughout her prolonged illness. That love and support sustained her during those 13 years. Lionel is forever grateful for that love and support.
