Michael B Thomas, 79, of Atlanta, Georgia, joined his wife of almost 60 years with Jesus, passing peacefully on May 10, 2026. He was born March 19, 1947, in Decatur, Georgia, to the late William H. Thomas, Jr., and Sara Bette M. Pratt. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Michael graduated from Briarcliff High School before marrying his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Evelyn F. Thomas, and beginning their family. He graduated from Georgia Tech with a Building Construction degree and began his lifelong career in construction, eventually running his own company for several years.
A man who dearly loved his family, and was greatly loved in return, Michael, along with Evelyn, raised three children: William H. Thomas, Michele R. T. Lewis, and Lisa T. Gilbert. He adored his 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, every one of them. He also cherished his two sisters, Sharon Bushman and Nancy Walker, and their families, and had a close relationship with his wife’s siblings and their families as well, along with other extended family members too numerous to name. He had many friends he considered part of his family, too.
Above all, Michael was very devoted to Jesus, having a deep, personal faith; it is said, had he not followed his dad’s footsteps into construction, he would’ve liked to have been in the ministry, possibly as a music minister. Together with his wife, Evelyn, Michael worshiped and served Jesus in many positions and in many ways at Tucker First Baptist Church for nearly 60 years.
In his spare time, Michael loved to travel, particularly to visit the many National and State parks covering our country, and especially with those he loved. He further enjoyed God’s creation by fishing, camping, golfing, and swimming at the beach. Michael also loved to play games, and was quite competitive. Music was another passion of his, and a God given talent he shared by singing in the church choir and performing solos, duets, etc; in addition, he belonged to the local Chorale for several years.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Main Street Church’s (formerly Tucker First Baptist) music department in memory of Michael. Donations given to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation in memory of Evelyn on behalf of Michael would also be welcome and appreciated.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the fine staff at Sunrise at Buckhead for the loving care they provided for both Michael and Evelyn; you helped make their final days better ones.
Please join us as we remember Michael’s life and honor his memory in a Celebration of Life Service (please wear “happy” colors) on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 10:45am, with a short visitation with the family immediately following in the lobby.
