Born in 1944 in Las Juries, Argentina to Rachel and Michael Shenkman, Peter moved to the United States at age six and built a life dedicated to serving others and spreading joy to all who knew him. He earned a Bachelor's degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1966 and a Master's degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1969. Peter worked as a counselor at the Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency from 1969 until his retirement in 1995.
Faith and spirituality were central to Peter's life. While maintaining a deep connection to his Jewish heritage, he also embraced Christianity and was an active, devoted member of his church community.
In 1982, Peter married Sharon Shenkman, beginning a beautiful partnership marked by extraordinary devotion and love that lasted until her passing in 2021.
Despite facing significant personal challenges, including bipolar disorder, Peter remained an inspiration to many through his joy for life and ability to see the best in everyone. His warmth drew people to him, and he never met a stranger. Friends and family will remember him for his selfless nature, generous spirit, and gift for making everyone feel valued.
Peter is survived by his brother Louis Shenkman, his brother- and sister-in-laws David and Lizzie Zucker Saltz and Joel and Mary Saltz, his nieces and nephews Tami, Dani, Alana, Emily, Havivah and Nadia, and his great-nieces and nephews Tomer, Alon and Mika. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Sharon and his parents, Rachel and Michael Shenkman.
A memorial service will be held on January 11 at 2:00 PM at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Tucker, Georgia.
