

Robert Gene Culbertson, 92, died Monday, February 8, 2016. Born August 19, 1923 in Akron, Ohio to Thomas and Vera Culbertson, he enlisted in the United States Army in 1943, serving in the Infantry and as a Master Aviator over a long and distinguished career. Having fought in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, he received dozens of medals and commendations, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, Legion of Merit, Purple Heart, and the Meritorious Service Medal. During his 29 years in the military, Bob earned a B.S. degree from the University of Maryland and an M.S. degree from the University of Southern California. He achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before retiring in 1972.
Following his retirement from the Army, Bob embarked on a second career with the Prudential Insurance Company, retiring in 1997. In his later years, he enjoyed traveling, socializing with friends and family, and meeting with his Macular Degeneration Support Group.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Culbertson; son Greg (Sharon) Culbertson and daughters Ann (Stan) Spurlock and Lynne Culbertson; grandchildren Dawn (Mark) Mast, Kyrce (Maureen) Culbertson, Brittany (Thomas) Bates, Lynley (Daniel) Lapp, Courtney (Jeb) Swartzentruber, Cameron (Sara) Culbertson, Jordan (Hannah) Culbertson, Kurt (Jenny) Spurlock, Chad Spurlock, and Wade Spurlock; and 19 great-grandchildren. Bob is also survived by his partner, Nancy Sharpe, and her family: son Harvey Sharpe, nephew Howard (Jill) Whelchel and their daughters Morgan and Madison, caregiver Cayce Guest, and a host of other family and friends.
Visitation is scheduled at Floral Hills Funeral Home, 3150 Lawrenceville Highway, Tucker, at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 27, followed by the memorial service at 2:00 p.m. and interment in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
