Robert Bernard Smith, Sr., affectionately known as Bobby, passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of May 29, 2025. He was born on December 11, 1948, and lived a life dedicated to family, service, and the simple joys that brought him happiness.
Bobby served his country in the United States Army, enlisting in January 1968, achieving the rank of Specialist Fourth Class (SP4). His service included a tour in Vietnam from February 1969 to September 1969. Following his honorable discharge in 1970, he continued to identify himself as a retired Army veteran throughout his years.
On February 5, 1970, Bobby married the love of his life, Rebecca Smith (Becky). Their marriage was a testament to true love and devotion, and they were blessed to celebrate 50 years together before Becky's passing in July 2020. Though unable to have biological children, Bobby and Becky welcomed a newborn baby boy to their home in July 1978, naming him Robert Bernard Smith, Jr. (Robby), whom they raised as their own son. Robby followed in his father's footsteps, serving in the United States Army for 12 years and achieving the rank of Sergeant.
Bobby was preceded in death by his wife, Becky; his parents, MB and Catherine Mary Smith; his brother, James (Jimmy) Smith; his father- and mother-in-law, Harold and Louise Smith; and his brother-in-law, Dennis Smith.
He is survived by his son, Robby, and Robby’s wife, Michel Williams, and their six children, Bobby's grandchildren. Bobby's surviving family also includes his niece, Tracy, and nephew, JJ (James Jr.), children of his brother Jimmy, and their children; Becky's sister, Helyn Beacham, and her sons, Tommy and Ronnie, and their children; Becky's brother, Norman, and his children, Toni and Tami (deceased), and their children; and Becky’s cousin, Genia, and her children.
Bobby had a deep love for his family, especially his wife Becky. He was a devoted fan of the Georgia Bulldogs and enjoyed listening to country music. In his later years, he could often be found at the local Waffle House. Bobby will be remembered for his quiet strength and his devotion to those he cared about.
To honor Bobby, consider supporting a veterans' charity or organization, or simply showing kindness to everyone, just as he did, every day.
A visitation for Robert (Bobby) will be held Monday, June 9, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Floral Hills Funeral Home & Cremation, 3150 Lawrenceville Highway, Tucker, GA, 30084, followed by a funeral from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM with military honors.
