Betty June Day was a wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, teacher, friend, writer, watercolor painter, but most of all a woman of faith.
She was born in Hydro, Oklahoma and grew up in Herford, Texas on the family farm. She attended West Texas State and graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor’s degree in Art and English. She taught in Portales, Ratan, Clovis, and Roswell New Mexico. In the summer she worked at youth camps and traveled extensively, one time flagging down a train in Alaska. In 1954 she moved to the Arizona desert to complete a Master’s degree at the University of Arizona. She became a counselor at Vail Middle School.
Betty June met Jerry at a Presbyterian singles club, the Sunday Evening Club. They celebrated 60 years of marriage in October. She left the classroom to become a full-time mother and was involved in La Leche League, Bible Study Fellowship, CARE Bible Study, Memory Lane Writers, Stevens Ministry and Community Groups.
Writing was Betty June’s gift. She corresponded with family and friends and loved writing poems and memoirs. In addition, she enjoyed growing plants, calligraphy, yard sales and sharing a good laugh. Even when her health deteriorated, Betty June continued to write letters and stories.
Betty June was very active in Christian Woman’s Club and Stonecroft Ministeries. She was honored to share her testimony all over the Southwest. She passed on her love of Jesus to her children and spent many hours praying for them.
Betty June is survived by her husband Jerry and their three children Darryl (Kiki), Deanna, and Daureen (Doug). She was blessed with four amazing grandchildren—Bryent, Breea, Dakota and Aaliyah.
A memorial service celebrating Betty June’s life will be Saturday, March 24, 11:00 am with a lunch to follow. Christ Community Church, 7801 E Kenyon Dr., Tucson, AZ 85710.
