Carl was born in the DC area and died in Tucson Arizona. Along the way he graduated from the University of Virgina and taught at the United States Air Force Academy (honorable discharge as a Captain). Carl was employed the McNeal Schwendler Corporation (MSC) for about two decades starting in the 1960s in Eagle rock California then opening the east coast office at NASA Langley and eventually the Munich Germany office before returning to Eagle Rock.
Carl was one of the three principals (with Keith Redner and Ed Konrath) to form Software Sciences Inc in 1973 to bid on the Nastran maintenance contract for NASA. SSI converted Nastran to the Cray 1 for Babcock and Willcox Corporation in February 1974 and sold an additional copy to Westinghouse Nuclear in June 1974.
Carl enjoyed biking, hiking, working on computers and attending dog shows.
