TUCSON, AZ. Daniel B. "Burke" Carroll, Jr., passed away unexpectedly at his home in Tucson, AZ on June 29, 2011. A loyal and loving son, brother, friend and colleague, Burke had been suffering from Sleep Apnea for the past six years. He was 52 years old.
Born in Brighton, MA on Jan. 21, 1959, Burke had summered in Harwich Port, MA since 1969. He was educated in Barrington, IL, and graduated from Bentley University in Waltham, MA. He was employed in the healthcare industry throughout his career, most recently as a regional marketing manager for Hill-Rom Corp., a healthcare equipment manufacturer.
A "man's man" and inveterate reader whose intellectual curiosity was seldom satiated, Burke held steadfast opinions on a variety of subjects ranging from athletics to politics. He participated in many sports and was an accomplished sailor, crewing as a grinder with world class sailors plying the waters of San Francisco Bay in the 1980s.
While residing in Tucson, Burke pursued many charitable endeavors. He served as a President and Board member of the Foothills Sertoma of Tucson, now the Foothills Club of Tucson, of which he was a founding member. Burke was the 2007-2008 Fundraising Chair, the 2008-2009 Club President, and served his remaining tenure as one of the Director/Trustees of the club. Throughout his time with these organizations Burke was instrumental in raising funds for Tucson charities, including the American Lung Association, the American Cancer Society, Big Brothers and Sisters of Tucson, Boys and Girl Club of Tucson, the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind, Casa De Los Ninos, Integrated Touch for Kids, the Shyann Kindness Project, Amphi basketball summer camp for kids, and the Southern Arizona Network for Downs Syndrome. His latest charitable undertaking consisted of raising grant money to house homeless veterans returning from the Middle East, many of whom are battling Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Said Bob Offret of Tucson, “Burke's humanitarian efforts and open hearted donation of his time working for good in the Tucson community will be greatly missed.”
Burke is survived by his parents, Dan and Connie as well as four siblings, Timothy of Harwich Port, MA, Michael (Naoko) of Tucson, AZ, Jennifer of Tucson, and Mark “Skipper” (Doris) of San Francisco, CA. He was predeceased by his infant nephew, Maximillian in November of 2009.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, July 8, 2011, at 9:30am at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 1436 N. Campbell Avenue, Tucson. A graveside service will be held at Island Pond Cemetery in Harwich, MA, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Burke's name to any of the charities at the Special Operations Warrior Foundation at www.specialops.org, www.lungarizona.org, or www.foothillscluboftucson.com would be appreciated.
