

Dean C. Short passed away June 7, 2015 at the age of 89. The son of Noble and Marjorie Short was born in Akron, Ohio on May 11, 1926. He attended Ellet High School in Akron where their basketball team won the State Championship and Dean was named first team all-state. He played basketball at Kent State his freshman year. He soon was drafted into the Army during WWII. He married his high school sweetheart, Mildred Hahn March 2, 1946. He moved his family to Tucson in 1950. He and Mildred bought a eight stool beer and wine tavern. They turned it into a very busy restaurant called Panda Steakhouse. He sold the Panda Steakhouse and bought the Ye Olde Lantern. He turned the lantern into one of the busiest restaurants in Arizona. He soon owned many other restaurants; Kon Tiki, Ports O’Call, El Corral, Cow Palace (Amado) and New London Company (Scottsdale). Not one to sit still, he got into the horse racing business. He bought Art Polard’s Farm in Sonoita, AZ. He soon had horses racing in California, Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing on his boat (Flying Eagle) in San Carlos, Mexico. He started at the time, the largest amateur golf tournament in Arizona (Blue Chip Classic). He is survived by his wife Millie (married 69 years); sons, Jeff, Dean (Elizabeth), Terry (Cheri) and Bill (Dec.) eight grand-kids and three great grand kids. A private service was held on Tuesday, 6/16/2015 at East Lawn Palms Mortuary & Cemetery.
