He was born in Arucas, Canary Islands, Spain, on May 16, 1937, the son of Elias Cheleuitte and Nasra Samur both of the French Protectorate of Djebel-Druze, present day Syria. He and his family ultimately immigrated to the Dominican Republic and subsequently to Puerto Rico, where he married Myrna Bauza, his spouse of 55 years. They made their home in Puerto Rico for many years where they raised two sons.
He was a graduate of La Salle Catholic High School in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He then continued his studies at the University of Santo Domingo, where he obtained a degree in business administration and became a certified public accountant.
In the 1970’s and early 80’s, he became Vice President and Treasurer of the largest insurance company in Puerto Rico. He later managed his own insurance brokerage corporation.
He was first and foremost a loving family man, particularly proud of raising two sons who are practicing physicians and his beloved grandchildren. He was a model husband and father. He was deeply spiritual and had a passion for charity work. He was involved in various Jesuit and Catholic charities, including Chairman of the Board at St. Gabriel School for Deaf Children in Puerto Rico. He also had a passion for baseball.
He was respected and beloved by his extended family and everyone who was fortunate to meet him. He did not discriminate on color of skin, religion, or social stature. He treated everyone with integrity and dignity.
He is survived by his wife Myrna Cheleuitte, his sons Ramon Elias (Jane), Domingo Jr, and grandsons Domingo Maurice and James Nathaniel. He was predeceased by his parents Elias and Nasra, his siblings Daher, George, Elias, and Sara. He is survived by a sister Juana and many nephews and cousins.
He will be dearly missed by all those whose lives he touched.
