With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Douglas James Odlaug, who departed peacefully on March 5th, 2025. Doug received a preliminary cancer diagnosis in September of 2024. He underwent a year-long treatment for CLL (Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia) which ended just a couple weeks before his death. During the past year, he also underwent heart valve replacement surgery, skin cancer removal surgery, physical therapy and ultimately contracted COVID 19. Despite the numerous appointments, procedures, surgeries, and therapies he underwent he remained in good spirits, had a positive and optimistic attitude and most of all, maintained his sense of humor throughout. He made sure that no matter what department or position any female he encountered occupied, she was going to hear his legendary “genie” joke; which ALWAYS got a good laugh. He was a cherished husband, father, brother, uncle and grandfather and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Doug was born on May 14, 1946 in Seattle, Washington to Walter and Mary Odlaug. He lived a full and vibrant life, filled with fun, jokes, hard work, convertible cars, a dedication to his family and an overall love and acceptance of others. He served honorably in the U.S. Army and fought on foreign soil during the Vietnam War and received a purple heart in connection to that service. Doug had an immense gratitude for the privilege of being treated and cared for by the VA Hospital of Southern Arizona as a result of his service.
He is survived by his wife of more than 51 years, Betty Odlaug, daughter and son in law Carly and Adam Wickliff, daughter Sarah Hornbeck, twin brother Gregory Odlaug, grandsons Luke, Zane, Gage and Jace as well as numerous beloved nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Mary, his older brother Patrick Odlaug, and his son Jeffrey Odlaug.
