Edwin Blair Baker passed away peacefully on February 28, 2013 at 84 years of age surrounded by his loving family. Ed was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan and came to Tucson in 1946 on a Harley Davidson motorcycle. He soon met Sheila Devine who he married in 1951 at the First Christian Church. Though he quickly grew to love the desert, he never forgot his childhood home and visited it frequently over the years with his growing family packed in his homemade camper. He was a successful and well respected Tucson home builder for over thirty years. Discovering the hilltop where he built their dream home was a highlight of his life and a place of many fond memories for his family. He found great fulfillment in carpentry projects, creating numerous beautiful and unique pieces of furniture which led to a second career building his famous "Contoured for Comfort" porch swings. His creative independent spirit was an inspiration to his children, many of whom followed in his footsteps by becoming entrepreneurs. Ed is survived by his wife of 62 years; children David (Irene), Thomas, Bonnie (Connie), Beverly (Rob), Brenda (Ritchie), Mitch (Sonja); grandchildren Catalina (Joe), Alex, Chris, Jaimie, Dan, Brad; and great-grandson Silas. He is also survived by his two sisters, Betty Flinski and Joy Lautenschleger of Michigan, as well as many nieces and nephews. Ed will be remembered for his zest for life and unwavering love for his family. He always extended a helping hand for others, had a great sense of humor, and was always ready for a hike to Sabino Canyon or beyond. He loved to whistle, a familiar sound that was heard even a few days before his passing. Those wishing to honor Ed's memory may make a donation to Habitat for Humanity or the charity of their choice. Following a private graveside service, the family will host a celebration of his life on April 7, 2013. Friends and acquaintances may contact a family member for details.
