Filiberto Moreno Cordova passed on April 11th, 2024, among his loved ones. Filiberto Jr. was born November 15th, 1932 to Filiberto Aros Cordova and Anita Tapia Moreno Cordova, both of whom preceded their son in passing. Filiberto was one of nine children, and was preceded in passing by his sisters Annie, Yolanda, and Dora, and his brothers Hector, Joe, and Pete. He is survived by his sister Wilma Laguna, and his brother Reyes Cordova.
Filiberto is survived by the love of his life, Guadalupe “Lupe” Ruiz Cordova, with whom he shared 62 years of marriage. He is further survived by their children Louie G. Navarette, Brenda R. Cordova (Abel), and Filiberto “Philly” R. Cordova III (Shannon). Filiberto was the patriarch of a large and devoted family, and is further survived by his grandchildren Aida Navarette, Sarah Navarette, and Jaime Gamez, Patrice Cordova-Malone, Antonio Cordova, Daniel Cordova, Alxceaa M. Cruz, Julianna F. Cruz, as well as sixteen great-grandchildren.
As a young man, Filiberto worked many jobs to help his mother care for his many siblings, beginning a long career as a jack-of-all trades to support his family. He worked hard to help his mother and his siblings, and continued to help her while he was in the military, sending money home so his siblings could go to school. Filiberto valiantly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, serving as a sergeant in Korea, acting as a machine gunner. He was honorably discharged from service following a letter Anita sent to the president, requesting that he be allowed to come home and help her as the main support of their family.
After his service, Filiberto spent many years as a barber, and worked as a union laborer. His primary specialty was construction, and heavy-equipment operations. Following his retirement, Filiberto remained active, never one to remain idle. He was a devout Christian, leading his children and grandchildren up in the way they should go and instilling in them a love and a reverence for the Lord. He spent his time nurturing his family, demonstrating the value of hard work and kindness. Filiberto further pursued an interest in football and boxing, and travelling. He indulged his wild side and enjoyed riding his Harley, as well as hunting, fishing, cookouts and camping. Above all else, there was nothing he enjoyed more than time spent with his beloved wife and their family. Filiberto will be deeply missed by all those who knew him, and his memory will be cherished in their hearts.
Services for Filiberto will be held Saturday, May 4, 2024 at 9:00 am at Funeraria del Angel South Lawn, 5401 South Park Ave, Tucson, AZ 85706. The visitation begins at 9:00am, followed by memorial service at 10:00am. After the memorial service, luncheon to follow.
