

Born at Saint Mary`s Hospital in Tucson Arizona to Thomas and Mary Frances Rains. The youngest of five children. He has two sisters and three brothers, loosing his twin brother at birth.
Fred grew up in Marana Arizona, he attended Marana Elementary and High school.
In 1966 At the age of 17 he dropped out of school and joined the United State Marin Corp Platoon 2232 in San Diego California.
Upon Graduating boot Camp in 1966 Fred attended Recon Training in Camp Lejeune, sniper school and was assigned to Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. He often shared stories of the iguanas that would try to steal his lunch while he was on guard duty because he could not perform his duty in a tower because he was not 18. Fred always had to find ways to outsmart the iguanas.
1968 he joined the Delta Company 1 Battalion 1st Marine Regiment 1sr Marine Division in Vietnam.
July 5-11, 1968, his heroic actions as the Weapons Squad Leader on hill 689 help recover many fallen Marines and he was awarded the Bronze Star Metal on September 12th, 1970, and the Silver Star Medal on October 8th, 1970.
Fred served in Vietnam till 1969 when he returned home with three purple hearts. Fred always had great humility about his service saying often “The first purple heart ok, second one they look at you funny and the third you are just clumsy!”
After returning to civilian life Fred worked various jobs in the mines in Morenci Arizona. He married Karen Hale and had one Daughter Kristi Michelle Rains.
In 1977 Fred started his career with the Arizona Department of Corrections. During his career he was one of the founding fathers of the Tactical Squad Unit TSU while working at Ft. Grant. He worked at the Douglas Complex, Safford Complex, Ft Grant and Tucson Complex.
Fred completed his High School education in the Marine Corp and continued his education after his discharge, graduating from Eastern Arizona University with an associate’s degree in arts.
Fred married Susan Hannahs in 1987, and became a stepfather to her four children Kent, Nicchia, Shane, and Troy. They were married until Susan's passing away in 2006
In 2010 Fred married Kimberly Roehl, and became a stepfather to her three children, Jillian, Robert and Katie.
Fred is proceeded in Death by his father, mother, three brothers and a sister. He is survived by his wife Kimberly Rains, Stepchildren Jillian (Yaser) Mehdipour, Robert (Bridget) Roehl, Katie (Brett) Pottinger, Kent (Shelly) Dainty, Troy (Krista) Dainty, Nicchia Leamer (Paul Overturf), Shane Hayden, a daughter Kristi Michelle Siltala, a son-in-law John Siltala. Three grandchildren, eight step grandchildren, extended family Soraya and Sadegh Mehdipour.
