Her last day on earth was November 24, 2017, in Tucson, Arizona; after almost ten years of battling health issues including dementia. Born on December 1, 1934 in Paintsville, Kentucky. Daughter of James Straley Kelly and Muriel (Merle) Lillian Hopson Kelly. Granddaughter of Isaac Newton Kelly, and Mary Elisabeth Olinger Kelly, Miranda Alice Marshall Hopson and Evan Alonzo Hopson. Survived by her sister Mary Ann Kelly Sorrell, daughter Carol Ann Lawrence, sons Thomas Allen Lawrence and Jonathan Glen Lawrence, grandchildren, nephew, great niece and nephew, beloved cousins, and great grandchildren. She attended Lafayette High school in Lexington Kentucky. After being teased for her small town accent, she dropped it, though kept the best colloquialisms. She attended Mary Washington College in Virginia and the University of Kentucky, where she met her future husband Stanley Allen (Alan) Lawrence, of Dry Ridge, Kentucky. They married August 20, 1955. The military took them all over including assignments in Germany and France. After living in Europe, Hawaii, South Carolina, California, they settled in Tucson, Arizona. There she worked at TUSD’s Educational Materials Center, Rincon High School, and Peter Howell Elementary. She lived in Tucson until 2000 when she returned to Lexington, Kentucky, to care for her mother. Intelligent, articulate, strong, witty and fun. She had an eye for fashion and design. She was very affectionate and warm and generous. She was a gracious hostess and a great cook. Her love and pride of her children and those close to her was abundant. She loved reading, mysteries, word puzzles and told regaling stories.
She loved and valued travel and culture. She enjoyed learning. She always had a dictionary and thesaurus accessible, though would address crucial grammar errs off the cuff. A true Kentuckian, she loved bourbon, horses, and good company. She wanted us not to mourn, but to celebrate life.
